High profile segment of Fort Lauderdale Beach renourishment completed

Sand hauling for beach renourishment from Terramar Street north to approximately N.E. 16th Street was recently completed. The contractor is currently demobilizing and restoring the knee wall that was removed for access, as well as removing all of the equipment from the beach.

The purpose of the renourishment project is to reconstruct areas of the eroded beach and increase storm protection to upland development along portions of the shoreline.

Residents living near the entry points for trucks loaded with sand graciously endured noise and truck traffic during the renourishment. As a result, everyone can now enjoy the beautiful expanded beach!  Thank you to our neighbors!

The ACE awards are presented each year to recognize an individual, business, or organization for outstanding service to FXE and the community.

REVA, Inc. received the Special Recognition Award for their exemplary collaboration, cooperation, and teamwork during a mock emergency training exercise at FXE last summer. REVA provided extensive resources for the exercise, including a jet aircraft and a team of personnel to work alongside Fort Lauderdale Fire-Rescue, Police, the Federal Aviation Administration Control Tower, and the Executive Airport Operations and Security staff. REVA's outstanding service and support assisted the City with being even more prepared to more effectively deal with an actual aircraft disaster.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection has made significant investments at FXE  to enhance the speed, efficiency, and convenience of our Customs operations while maintaining the highest levels of safety and security , including constructing a new, award-winning 7,800 square foot facility and installing the country's first Global Entry kiosk that allows pre-approved, low-risk travelers to expedite their arrival. In addition,  CBP's highly-trained professional staff provides the support and protection needed to safeguard Fort Lauderdale's current and future generations.

Please join us in congratulating both of these outstanding award recipients for their dedication and commitment to building community.
New River Bridge to Close Feb. 11-23, 2017

All Aboard Florida  (AAF) will close the New River Bridge beginning February 11, 2017 at 12:01 a.m. through February 23, 2017 at 12:01 a.m. to rehabilitate the bridge in preparation for the Brightline passenger rail service. The bridge will remain in the locked down position throughout the closure.

The U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) approved the deviation to the existing operating schedule so the rehabilitation can occur. Significant planning and coordination with the USCG and Marine Industries Association of South Florida occurred to execute the bridge closure.

The bridge is being closed so the two outer trunnions can be milled in place, and the trunnion base can be removed and repaired off-site. The trunnion milling work will be performed 24 hours per day until completed.

For more information, please contact Ali Soule, Public Affairs Manager, All Aboard Florida, at 305-520-2105.

N.E. 13th Street Complete Streets Construction Update

The City of Fort Lauderdale continues to work with our neighbors to address one of their top priorities, which is to have a more walkable, bikeable, connected, and sustainable transportation network for everyone, regardless of travel mode, age, or ability. The City is thrilled to announce another project is underway that addresses this priority.

Construction on the N.E. 13th Street Complete Streets Project, which spans from N.E. 4th Avenue to N.E. 9th Avenue, began in late November. The Central City Redevelopment Authority and Central City Alliance have been working closely with City staff to bring this project to fruition, which is designed to improve safety, promote and inspire economic development in the area, and expose the area's potential.

This project also underscores the City's commitment to Vision Zero Fort Lauderdale, a street safety action plan designed to reduce traffic deaths and serious injuries on our streets to zero. By improving street design and implementing traffic calming measures to make 13th Street safer, we're making progress toward our goal of achieving Vision Zero and, ultimately, saving lives.

The scope of this almost $1.9 million project includes repaving asphalt and installing green bike lanes, permeable parking islands, bioswales, street trees, wider sidewalks, crosswalks, pedestrian lighting, and a roundabout.  The construction phases of the project are as follows:

Phase 1-  Installation of medians;
Phase 2 - Sidewalk widening and installation of pedestrian light poles; and
Phase 3 - Construction of Old Dixie Highway intersection;
Phase 4 - Construction of parking aisle and bioswale construction, followed by installation of green bike lanes and street paving.

Parallel to the roadway construction, a local team of artists is working to finalize the design of the "Unity" public art piece that will be installed in the center of the roundabout being constructed at Old Dixie Highway and N.E. 13th Street. The Unity art piece, which will be installed before street construction is complete, is a result of neighbor collaboration and funding provided through a Community Foundation of Broward Art of Community grant received by H.O.M.E.S., Inc.

The City expects construction on the N.E. 13th Street project to be complete in late summer.

New features: Interactive Residential Diagram

We're excited to announce some new features on the City website designed to make it easier for neighbors to navigate the permitting process. An Interactive Residential Diagram shows the most common residential permit types and provides a checklist of all documentation and reviews needed to obtain the associated permit. The checklists include hyperlinks to the documents neighbors need to submit for application approval. We also put together an extensive list of Frequently Asked Questions to help neighbors determine if they need a permit, and let them know how to get started. As we continue to bring our citywide vision to fruition and create "the City you Never Want to Leave," we will continue to look for ways to enhance City services and improve neighbor quality of life.
