Michael's Memo

Have you ever heard about a need somewhere in the world and wished that you could be there to help? I know I have wanted to reach out and help families suffering from disasters, people who do not have enough to eat, and people that need shelter in war torn parts of the world. Sometimes I just wish I could be there myself and bring resources and share God's love. The truth is I cannot be everywhere in the world where there is a need. Is that really the truth? Actually there is a way for me to be everywhere where there is suffering. That way is to give to the Week of Compassion Offering that will be received here at Slash on the last two Sundays in February. Wherever there is a need in the world, Week of Compassion will be there and because we give, we will be there too.

You are here. You are there when there is not enough to eat.  You are there in places where refugees need a bed. You are there in a community that is coming back and being rebuilt after a disaster. You are in the United States after a tornado or anywhere else in the world there is a need. You are there when you give to the Week of Compassion. "Just as you did it to the one of least of these who are members of my family, you did it to me." MATTHEW 25:40

Please give generously February 19th and 26th.

En Agape',

Rev. Michael

WANTED:   Anyone who can deliver Meals-On-Wheels on the second and fourth Tuesday of the month (at lunch time). Please signup on the Disciple Women's bulletin Board in the hall outside the Nursery.   February May, and July have someone signed up.   It takes about an hour to pick up the meals at the First Baptist Church in Ashland and deliver the meals.   Currently there are 5-6   stops.   For many this is the only person the recipient   sees all day, and the only well-rounded meal they will have for that day. This is Slash Christian Church reaching out.

Outreach Opportunities

Christmas Family Update
Just in case you missed the update from our Christmas Family, you stepped up as always with your truly generous outpouring of love to those less fortunate and to whom you do not even know.   Matthew 25:40, Jesus says ". . . I tell you the truth, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me."   Your gifts were so much appreciated and needed.    Thank you again from the Outreach Team !

Week of Compassion Offering - February 19 and 26
Theme for 2017:  "You are here."
"Week of compassion is the relief, refugee and development mission fund of the Christian Church - Disciples of Christ in the United States and Canada.   We seek to equip and empower disciples to alleviate the suffering of others through disaster response, humanitarian aid, sustainable development and the promotion of mission opportunities."

Through your generous giving to the Week of Compassion Offering February 19 and 26, let us work together to relieve hunger and thirst, provide tools to help sustain life, and provide the knowledge needed to continue sustaining life where nature has not been so kind.
Week of compassion helps to provide for the immediate needs after hurricanes, tornadoes, earthquakes and floods as well as providing long term resources in areas where drought is prevalent and tools are not easily available to sustain life.  By giving, You Are Here as your gifts go to work. Let us help to make a difference!

Relay for Life Walk - Saturday June 17th

The Outreach Team is putting together a relay team for Slash Christian Church to help battle cancer.   Probably every one of you is related to someone or knows someone who has been affected by cancer.   Research is making progress and hopefully in the years to come, there will be a cure (or prevention) for many forms of cancer.  This year's Western Hanover Relay for Life will be held on Saturday, June 17th at Kings Dominion Camp Wilderness Campground in Doswell.
