Kerns needs YOU! Board elections will be held at this month's May 18th meeting, and we are seeking new board members to join the community conversation. Now is your chance to join the KNA board and let your voice be heard.
If you live, work or own property in the neighborhood, being on the board is great opportunity to gain leadership skills, connect with neighbors, and give input about the future of the neighborhood. We would love to have you on board! We currently only have 11 active board members for our entire neighborhood -- we need more people to share the love and sustain our organization. We are in need of people to fill board positions and volunteers to help keep our annual events alive & healthy. This year, we do not yet have a picnic chair for the annual National Night Out planned for Tuesday, August 2nd. Each year, over 500 neighbors join us for an evening of fun with live music, free food and raffle prizes from local businesses. If there are a few of you out there willing to help coordinate activities, we have past volunteers that can show you the ropes and volunteer at the event. The picnic has been gathering neighbors together for as long as I can remember, so please let us know if you are willing to help keep the tradition going. We have a few open board positions including SE Uplift Board member and Crime Prevention Chair. We also need people to help out on the Communications committee, specifically updating the website (www.kernspdx.org) and our Facebook page. Please consider becoming an active member of our board so we can continue to be a thriving neighborhood organization. We can't do it without your help! | S.E. Uplift - Article Excerpt | Neighborhood Small Grants Funding To Be Cut 
The Neighborhood Small Grant Program boasts 9 years of such stellar projects - putting money where it counts - in the community. The program has funded 143 projects within SE Uplift. These collaborative grants ran an average of a little over $2,000 per project and leveraged over four dollars for every single dollar granted.
Here's how you can help: write or email the Mayor and the other Portland City Council members, ask them to support this program that does so much with so little for our city. If you were a grant recipient, or benefited from, or delighted in a project funded by this program - write! Central City 2035 Proposed Draft Release Date Now June 20th 
Planning and Sustainability Commission to hold public hearings in July and August.
Originally scheduled to be released on May 10, the Central City 2035 (CC2035) Proposed Draft will now be released on June 20, 2016. Project staff will use the extra time to consider feedback on the Discussion Draft in order to shape the Proposed Draft. On June 28, staff will present the Proposed Draft to the Planning and Sustainability Commission (PSC) at a briefing. Commissioners will then hear public testimony at two hearings: one on July 26 and the other on August 9. Portlanders are invited to submit testimony on the Proposed Draft to the PSC in person or in writing, prior to or at the hearings. Then read instructions and tips for testifying. Next steps following the hearings, the PSC will hold work sessions on September 27, November 8 and November 22 to formulate its recommendation on the CC2035 Plan. The project will then go before the Portland City Council for consideration and adoption. The CC2035 Plan will be the first amendment to Portland's Comprehensive Plan, and the specific recommendations contained within the plan are expected to become effective in early 2018. As you may remember, Mayor Hales asked all bureaus to submit 5% reduction packages from the General Fund. He is using this year's budget process to determine if any budget realignments should be made within bureaus and between bureaus to fund City priorities, as well as other basic service needs.

People riding Portland Streetcar every evening on First Thursday from May through October will not have to pay a fare thanks to a sponsorship from Wave, a Northwest gigabit fiber and broadband services company.
Wave is sponsoring "Ride Free First Thursday" program for all Portland Streetcar patrons citywide riding on First Thursdays from 5:00pm until closing. All lines of the Portland Streetcar operate from 5:45 AM to 11:30 PM on weekdays. About the Portland Streetcar. As the first modern streetcar system to be built in the United States, the Portland Streetcar serves 15,000 riders each day on the A/B Loops and the North/South (NS) Line. Ridership is expected to grow to 20,000 riders per day by 2025. |

The World Affairs Council is seeking host families for 15 high school students and 3 adult educators from Angola, Ghana, Rwanda and Tanzania. Students are 15-18 years old, English-speaking, and selected by their local U.S. embassy.
These teen leaders are visiting May 27-June 4 through a U.S. State Department exchange focused on social entrepreneurship and civic engagement. A great way to learn about another country and connect with young activists working to improve their community! |
