What We Have Been Learning
|
|
Social Studies
- We have arranged ourselves into colonies and are getting ready to "set sail".
- We are looking at the reasons why people came to the New World.
- We have been practicing our map skills.
SAVE THE DATE: Friday, March 17th for Colonial Day. We will need a lot of volunteers to make this happen. Stay tuned for more information.
|
Writer's Workshop
- We are narrowing down our essay topics and discussing what would make a strong essay.
- We are seeing both sides of the opinion.
Coming up: Hooking readers, using transitions, and strong conclusions.
|
Reading Workshop
- We are getting to know our characters and how they affect the stories.
|
|
Math/Science:
- We have been practicing the Order of Operations.
- We will start our unit on fractions with a review of what fractions represent.
Scientists use poetry to share their knowledge of the natural world.
- We researched bacteria, then wrote poems for two voices to compare beneficial and harmful microbes.
Scientists use models to understand what is invisible to the naked eye. Although models are meant to enhance our understanding, they have limitations.
- We used models to notice changes in the behavior of molecules when matter changes from a solid to a liquid to gas.
|
|
Talking with your child is the best way to support classroom learning. The following questions can help you get started.
- What is the sacred V?
- Are all bacteria bad?
- What's the difference between molecules in a solid and a gas?
Ask your child about the characters in their book:
- Who is the main character? What are they like?
- What are some traits of the main character? Where did you find evidence of this in the story?
- How has your character changed?
- What is the problem the character is facing?
- How does your character add to the story?
- Have you made a connection with any of the characters?
Your child should be reading for 30 minutes each day!
