Woolworth and the Climate of Change

In this month of February in 1905 F. W. Woolworth &
View of Woolworth Building and surrounding buildings, New York City
Company was formally incorporated. Frank Winfield  had the idea to s tart a store that stocked only 5-cent merchandise. It lat er added 10-cent merchandise. By 1909, Woolworth went international with stores in England and eventually expanding into Europe. By 1913, the Woolworth corporate office building in New York (see picture) was completed, standing at 792 feet tall and it was the tallest building in the world at the time.

Winfield merged and purchased many businesses throughout his career including Foot Looker, which to this day is still owned by Woolworth (which today is called Venator Group). Although, as quickly as Woolworth Stores opened, which at one time was every 17 days, they closed due to the vast array of competitors. By 1998 all Woolworth stores had closed completely.

So what does this have to do with the Emerging Enterprise Center? Winfield had a vision for his company. He took a unique idea, made decisions, and took action much like our current incubator tenants today. What can we learn from Winfield? He took his company and saw the changing economy and diversified his product base by merging and purchasing other companies or products. It is amazing to think that even if we don't see a Woolworth store around anymore that the company still exists with other mergers that it accumulated in its growth. So as you look to the future of your business, consider these facts: economical change, business development, competition, diversification, and customer/client loyalty and embrace change for your business.
