President's Message

Drought Far From Over

Santa Barbara has received 2 - 3 inches of rain in the last week alone.  Most of our reservoirs have now received 130% to 180% of normal rainfall for this rain year.  We all saw the pictures in the news a few weeks ago of Gibraltar reaching capacity and spilling for the first time in years.

And we are still in a severe drought.

In fact, Lake Cachuma is still at only 14.5% capacity, rising only 7% through all of these storms over the last two months.

The point is, we still need to be vigilant.  We still need to maintain our outstanding efforts at conservation, efforts that have made Santa Barbara among the most conservation-minded communities in the State.

And yes, we still need the desalination plant.

In an effort to provide you with the latest on the drought and how the City plans on addressing it, we're pleased to welcome Rebecca Bjork, the City's Public Works Director, and Madeline Ward, the Water Conservation Supervisor, to an informational luncheon on March 2 nd  at 11:30am at the Santa Barbara Club.

This important event, part of the  Hospitality Santa Barbara program, has been extended to Chamber members.  I hope you'll come join us as we hear from the experts on what our water future has in store for residents and businesses alike.  For more information, call us here at the Chamber at 965-3023.

Non-Profit of the Month

Young America's Foundation is committed to ensuring that increasing numbers of young Americans understand and are inspired by the ideas of individual freedom, a strong national defense, free enterprise, and traditional values.

As the principal outreach organization of the Conservative Movement, the Foundation introduces thousands of American youth to these principles. We accomplish our mission by providing essential conferences, seminars, educational materials, internships, and speakers to young people across the country.

Young America's Foundation stepped forward to save President Reagan's Western White House, Rancho del Cielo, in the spring of 1998 to preserve it as a living monument to Ronald Reagan to pass on his ideas to future generations. President Reagan committed himself to reaching young people with his ideas-a goal that is also central to the Foundation's mission.

Preserving the Ranch and passing on the President's lasting accomplishments is Young America's Foundation's way of thanking Ronald Reagan for all he has done for his country and the world. His beloved ranch is a place of learning, a place of encouragement and a place of inspiration for generations to come. The Reagan Ranch Center in downtown Santa Barbara is a "schoolhouse for Reaganism" where young and old alike can visit and learn more about one of America's greatest presidents.

Young America's Foundation's Center for Entrepreneurship & Free Enterprise educates and inspires young people to defend and articulate free enterprise principles. The Center's program aim to popularize the ideas of free markets, limited government, and lower taxes necessary to generate economic growth and prosperity for more Americans.

Latest Storms Push Santa Barbara County Seasonal Rainfall Totals Well Above Normal
With the latest storms, all areas of Santa Barbara County are well above average for seasonal rainfall, but what has fallen has only made a small dent in the region's persistent drought.

SBIFF 2017: Mid-Fest Wrap - What's Happened So Far at the Fabulous Santa Barbara International Film Festival
By general consensus, according to my very informal survey, the Santa Barbara International Film Festival ( SBIFF) film cited as the best of fest - five days in, anyway - is Raoul Peck's stunning and inventive I Am Not Your Negro, which imaginatively addresses texts by James Baldwin and swatches of history to convey the strongest study/indictment of racism I've ever seen.

Bacara Resort & Spa in Goleta put up for sale

The Pacific Hospitality Group listed the Bacara Resort & Spa in Goleta for sale for an undisclosed amount, PHG Chief Investment Officer Kory Kramer said.
The Irvine-based company has invested more than $25 million in upgrades and renovations since it purchased the resort in 2013 for an estimated $150 million to $180 million.
