How Great is God?

I'm fascinated by the capability of computers to calculate and derive precise answers to extensive equations. But even computers cannot gauge the immensity of God. I recently asked Siri on my IPhone the question, "How great is God?" Her reply? "I'm not equipped to answer that question, Delores." Of course, not. He is limitless!

One of my favorite Bible verses to use in prayer and praise is Psalms 145:3: "Great is the Lord and most worthy of praise; his greatness no one can fathom." A fathom is a nautical unit of measurement used to determine the depth of water. In other words, if the scope of God's greatness cannot be fathomed, it is beyond measure. It cannot be adequately described or comprehended by the most intellectual of humans.

The righteous and godly man named Job in the Old Testament asked, "Can you fathom the mysteries of God? Can you probe the limits of the Almighty?  They are higher than the heavens above-what can you do? They are deeper than the depths below-what can you know? Their measure is longer than the earth and wider than the sea" (Job 11:7-9). Job, a most trusted sage of all times, was totally unable to describe the awesomeness of our God and His works.

Though we are humanly incapable of comprehending God's omnipotence, we can still know Him! We can personally talk to Him as Father and daughter! His kindness, power and resources are ours to help us in this messy world of rebellion, disease and fear. How it rejoices His heart when his children come to Him for help and ask Him for the Spirit of wisdom and revelation to know Him better!

Are you feeling overwhelmed with your smallness and out-of-control circumstances? It's okay. Your fathomlessly loving Heavenly Father, the great and awesome God, is waiting to be your refuge and strength, your "ever present help in the time of need" (Psalm 46:1). You only need to ask Him!

     Blessings and hugs,
