GO Red for Women
February is American Hearth Month and the American Heart Association is going red! Go Red for Women is a national campaign that aims to encourage awareness of the issue of women and heart disease.
Go Red for Woman is a national campaign that was created to empower women to take charge of their heart heath. For far too long, heart disease has been typecast as an older man's disease despite the fact that heart disease claims the lives of over 500,000 women each year. Only 55 percent of women realize heart disease is their Number 1 killer and less than half know what are considered healthy levels for cardiovascular risk factors like blood pressure and cholesterol.

The campaign encourages awareness of the issue of women and heart disease and also action to save more lives. The movement harnesses the energy, passion, and power women have to band together and collectively wipe out heart disease.  It challenges them to know their risk for heart disease and take action to reduce their personal risk. It also gives them the tools they need to lead a heart healthy life.

In 2010, the AHA set a strategic goal of reducing death and disability from cardiovascular disease and stokes by 20 percent while improving the cardiovascular health of all Americans by 20 percent by the year 2020.

The Campaign supports awareness, research, education and community programs to benefit women. The AHA offers educational programs, advancing women's understanding about their risk for heart disease and providing tools and motivation to help women reduce their risk to protect their health. Funds raised by Go Red For Women activities also support research to discover scientific knowledge about heart health. More than 200,000 health care provider offices have received Go Red For Women educational tools to use with their patients.

Macy's and Providence Health Care present this year's Go Red For Women Luncheon. The keynote speaker for Spokane's Go Red Luncheon is motivator, educator and nurse, Joey Traywick,. The Luncheon takes place on February 22nd, 2017 from 9am-1pm at the Spokane Convention Center. The Luncheon includes a Wellness Expo and health screenings for guests. Opportunities are available for people at food drives, special events, sorting food at our warehouse and office support. Volunteers make it possible for Second Harvest to get food to where it's needed most. Look for opportunities in Spokane and the Tri-Cities year-round.

Greg Barclay - Volunteer Coordinator

Volunteers make a huge difference within the ministries of the Union Gospel Mission. In 2015, they served 109,173 hours in positions as diverse as receptionist and auto mechanic. They served thousands of meals, mended clothes, provided medial and legal care, baked birthday cakes, led worship and added to our services in countless ways. Most significantly, they demonstrated hearts of love and compassion for people who often feel unloved, unnoticed, and unworthy. So if you're interested in reaching out to the homeless, bring your heart and your talents and come prepared to receive as well as to give.
