ROXBURY SCHOOLS IN THE NEWS

Roxbury Reimagined at Roxbury High School

Dear Community Members, Administrators, Teachers, and Students:

"Carpe diem!" There are times when we must choose to take advantage of opportunities or remain satisfied with the status quo. Roxbury School District has never been one to sit back and rest on its laurels. That's the reason we continue to win championships, gain awards and accolades, and provide an exemplary comprehensive academic program for our students. We are persistently striving to "prepare our students of today for the challenges and opportunities of tomorrow." To that end, we have made a commitment to research, gather input and ideas, and to keep our eyes, ears and hearts open to possibilities.

You've heard the old adage, "from the mouths of babes...," and so I ask you to watch and listen to the wise words of our students as shared in this video:

After viewing it, there should be no doubt that we can do more and offer more to our students. What that "more" looks like is up to all of us to decide. We want to hear from you!  Please take a moment to share your perspective. Every voice is important! Let yours be heard. What do you think would enhance the educational experience in Roxbury? Is there something more we can offer towards our goal of filling the gaps and helping students discover their passion?

This survey seeking your vision of "more" for Roxbury students will remain open until February 24th. I hope you will participate in this exciting journey as we examine possibilities and discover our path.

If you should have any questions, please feel free to call or email me.

Sincerely,

Loretta L. Radulic
Superintendent of Schools

Mid-Year Registration for Grades 5-12

Roxbury's Applied Music Program is one of the most celebrated after school programs in the region. Blessed with award-winning music educators offering world-class instruction, the program nurtures local talent, empowering students to pursue careers in entertainment well after graduation.

This is a district-wide program that provides a high-quality enhancement to classroom instruction. Teachers are all specialists on their instrument or vocal specialty. All of our teachers are trained professional musicians and highly qualified in their instrument of expertise. Private study is extremely valuable to the individual student and highly encouraged. Private study is offered as enrichment, NOT remedial instruction. It is encouraged for the complete development of each students' potential as a performing musician and/or artist.

We are beginning mid-year registrations for those students interested in taking private lesson. Once the form and registration fee are received, your child will be assigned a weekly lesson time.

Accents on Dance Upcoming Programs

Hip Hop Dance After School

Hip Hop is an eclectic street style of dance that is performed in running shoes to current upbeat tempos. The dynamic moves taught in Hip Hop class are fast, stylish, funky and similar to those seen in music videos.

This class is appropriate for high energy dancers that are driven by a beat. Similar to a Jazz class, Hip Hop is broken down into 3 parts - warm up, corner work/technique and choreography. Students in a Hip Hop class will work on their strength, flexibility, and musicality through intricate fun and fast paced funky choreography.

Since the tempos are usually quicker than any other dance form, the choreography in a Hip Hop class provides a great cardio workout and is also a fun way to exercise the mind and memory.

(Children should wear comfortable clothes and sneakers to class)

Date:   Throughout the 2016/2017 School Year
Time: After-School at the Designated School
Location: Franklin and Jefferson Elementary Schools
Cost: $75 per child
