Dear CoTESOL Enthusiasts:
Thank you for taking the time to look at these wo
rds as CoTESOL begins its 5th decade. Our 40th anniversary celebration and convention allowed us time to relive the vainglorious (ha!) days when the TESOL president was asked to bail us out of some precarious financial times, and it also allowed us to acknowledge where we are today; o
ne of the
largest affiliate organizations in the country! Now, with your help, we will take the next step and design our future.
I am honored to be a part of this process as CoTESOL's new president, so please allow me to introduce myself. My area of expertise is at the intersection of language learning and subject areas, especially in the STEM fields. My academic background and my experience reflect this combination of interests as I have undergraduate degrees in education and in engineering, a master's degrees in cultural and linguistic diversity as well as a master's in mathematics. My doctorate was an attempt to combine both passions with an eye towards improving the success of K-12 language learners in mathematics. As a Teacher of English to Speakers of Other Languages, I have primarily worked with language learners as a mathematics teacher in urban settings that are considered high poverty.
My personal interests dovetail very nicely with the upcoming goals of CoTESOL. This year, you should look forward to discussions about social justice issues (our changing political landscape is a virtual guarantee that this area of conversation will remain lively). CoTESOL has already signed onto a coalition to establish a Seal of Biliteracy in the state of Colorado, and this is an effort that I wholeheartedly endorse. Look for regular reports on other work from our wonderful Socio-Political Liaisons Kat Bradley-Bennett and Elizabeth Schroeder.
As we enter our fifth decade, we would like your input about how we can remain successful as an organization. What do you think are success indicators for CoTESOL? What would you like to see that is new? What do you think we can jettison? I hope to actively seek your input about the vision of CoTESOL and how we can improve. Perhaps this discussion will stimulate your thinking about next year's convention. Perhaps you will consider presenting for the first time.... And speaking of conventions, keep an eye out for more information about our exciting spring convention this year in Montrose which has been organized by our inimitable Patty Voorhis!

Montrose County School District hosts
2017 Spring Conference - Partners with CoTESOL

 CoTESOL is partnering with Montrose County School District (MCSD) to co-host its spring conference at Montrose High School this coming May. The Conference will be held Saturday, May 13, 2017. Patty Voorhis, MSCD's ELL/Migrant Coordinator, has taken the lead in organizing the conference.
Dr. Jennifer L. Daniels of Colorado Mesa University will be the keynote speaker.

 Thank you to all who attended CoTESOL's 40th Annual Fall Convention. CoTESOL board members worked hard to make the experience not only worthwhile but enjoyable and inspiring. We hope that the convention exceeded your expectations and supported you, the CoTESOL membership, in furthering your professional development.
As always, there were many opportunities to connect, share ideas, and learn from one another. With over 140 scheduled presentations, including 16 Exhibitor Sessions, 12 SIGnature presentations, and four Featured Presentations, there was a lot on offer. We hope that you encountered sessions and presenters that spoke to your particular needs and interests within the TESOL field.

Language Instruction in Content Areas, or "I Don't Teach ESL.

 Fill in the blank with any content area: history...science...art... math...PE. Ad nauseam. Many secondary content area teachers appear to relegate the teaching of language to the ESL specialist in a sheltered classroom. Many elementary teachers appear to isolate the teaching of language to the language arts block. Some teachers, but not enough, have embraced including the teaching of language with their content instruction. As a result, our bilingual students have limited opportunities to learn. (Read more).
