Come just to listen or to dance to the blue grass and old time musicians who play every  Tuesday and Saturday beginning at 7pm. Admission  is $5 on Tuesday and $6 on Saturday. Line Dancing classes are also offered on Monday nights beginning at 6pm. The Jubilee is located on North Main Street, across from the Courthouse.

Barn Quilt Trails 

Barns and other buildings around the county display squares illustrating quilt patterns and add interest to a driving tour of the countryside. Drop by Alleghany Chamber of Commerce and Visitors' Center for a brochure. We are in the rock building with the green awning (58 South Main Street, Sparta). Our foyer is always open and a brochure is always available.

Driving Loops
Brochures for three driving loops of the Alleghany country-side are available at the Alleghany Chamber of Commerce and Visitors' Center. Each loop is about a leisurely hour's drive and includes information on historic points along the way. The Chamber office is in the rock building with the green awning (58 South Main Street, Sparta). Our foyer is always open and a brochure is always available.
Be sure to visit when planning a trip this Spring or Summer. Open Thursday through Saturday, 10am to 5pm. There's never an admission charge. Stop by to experience local history and to see the new displays, 7 North Main Street, Sparta.

Veterans' Morning Coffee & Breakfast
 at the VFW
The VFW hosts an informal full breakfast including, biscuits, gravy, eggs, bacon, sausage, grits, and coffee every Wednesday from 8:30-11am. All veterans are invited to attend.  Click to learn more .
 
The VFW Military Museum is open to the public, 10am-2pm, every Wednesday and Saturday in the basement of the VFW Post 7034, 1193 Us Highway 21 S, Sparta, NC. Admission is free.

The Alleghany County Republican Party

The Alleghany County Republican Party will hold its monthly meeting at 6 PM at the Bruce Wayne Osborne VFW Post No. 7034. Meals will be $10 each.

We will hear from the local elected officials & will also discuss the March county convention in which we will be electing officers for the county and precincts.

Northwestern Regional Library Photography Contest

This contest is open to all library members of Alleghany, Stokes, Surry or Yadkin Counties. Contest includes juvenile,

Alleghany County Library

The Alleghany County Library will be providing FREE V olunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) for the public,  by reservatio n only . Households making less than $54,000 during 2016 are eligible for this service.  Certified volunteers will be at the Alleghany County Library on Wednesdays from 9:00 am - 3:30 pm and on Saturdays from 9:00 am - 1:00 pm.

VITA will be available at the Alleghany County Library from January 25 - April 12.  The Alleghany County Library is at its new location at 115 Atwood Street, next to the Wilkes Community College campus.  To schedule an appointment, contact the Alleghany County Library by phone at 336-372-5573 or by email at dbrewer@nwrl.org.

Alleghany Writers Put Pen to Paper

The Alleghany Writer's are moving their monthly meeting to the new Alleghany Library starting on the February 16th meeting from 4 PM to 5:30 PM
There will be readings from the January prompt, some news on upcoming workshops and critique groups, and discussion on ways to submit stories for publication.
All are invited. There is no pressure to read. Just lots of creative energy!

Join us for the  Hillbilly Hoedown  with  Rise and Shine Band  every Tuesday night. Admission $5 on Tuesday, $6 on Saturday, age 12 and under free.

Alleghany High School
 
Alleghany High School will be hosting the I-A Regional Wrestling Tournament on Friday and Saturd ay February 10th and 11th . There
 wil l be 28 to 3 2 high school wrestling
teams participating in this tourname nt. These wrestlers are competing to m ove on to the NC State Championship.  
Sparta will be booming on Feb. 10th and 11th with lots of parents and family members. This means they will be looking to eat and shop in our downtown area!

Flight of the American Woodcock

Witness the amazing courtship flight of the American Woodcock. Also learn about its life history, and some cool facts about this unique woodland shore bird that is rarely seen. This bird is perfectly camouflaged and rarely heard. The exception occurs in late winter and early Spring when the male birds perform dizzying courtship displays. Meet at New River State Park's Visitor Center at Hwy 221 access for a short slide show and then the main attraction. Program starts at 6 PM on February 25, 2017. Be prepared to spend at least 20 minutes outside in the cold air and dark skies.

Black Bears

Learn about Black Bears! Join a Park Ranger to learn about this often feared creature on Feb. 18, 2017. Black bears can be found throughout a large portion of NC. They often make the news when they pass through a populated area. This program will separate the facts and myths about black bears. Winter Hike 
Meet at the US Hwy 221 Visitor Center for a nature hike on Feb. 19, discussing various aspects about nature in winter. This hike will be about 2 miles long and will take place on trail that are easy to moderate for the average person. It is recommended to wear sturdy shoes, dress according to the weather for the day and bring water.

100 Mile Challenge

Project WILD Workshop

Project WILD workshops are for adults interested in teaching young people about wildlife. Participants receive the Project WILD K-12 educator guide along with materials specifically about North Carolina wildlife. The educator guide contains more than 150 hands-on activities that focus on wildlife and natural resources. Please come dressed for the weather as the entire workshop will be held outdoors on March 22, 2017.  The six hour workshop can can count towards Criteria I, II or Continuing Education credit for the NC EE Certification Program. Formation of Stone Mountain

Come celebrate the North Carolina Science Festival by going on a .5 mile moderate hike to the south face of Stone Mountain on April 15. There, a ranger will discuss the formation of Stone Mountain. Bring shoes suitable for hiking.
