Seriously Nice Budget Italians;

1. Pinot Grigio
2. Sparkling Brut Rose
3. 4 Grape Super Tuscan Red

Today we tasted a variety of Italian wines with wine importer, Dejan Petrovic. There were three which we thought were exceptional in both category and price point..Our notes are to follow, as well as some technical info.

All of the very best, Rex and Michele

1.  2015 Marcato La Giareta Pinot Grigio Veneto   Michele immediately said it tasted like Chablis,and it does. There are serious indications of both the chalk and volcanic soil of Chablis in this Pinot Grigio, because both of those aspects of soil composition exist in this region of Veneto. This Pinot Grigio is a combination of refreshing pear combined with lemon flavors. There is kumquat and apricot pit at the center with a granite, wet stone finish.  $14.50 ( tastes well beyond this price point )
I hate to say this, but I am not a fan of Pinot Grigio.  This one changed my mind...this wine is perfect for the spring and it really drinks at least twice the price...very impressive!!  This is one of those wine you buy by the case!!  If you blind tasted it, you could fool a lot of people.  Silly....but the label is pretty cool too. Michele

2. We like really good sparkling Rose. Because they tend to be expensive, we really like them when they are at reasonable cost. Today we tasted the
N.V. Buonamico Rose Brut ( Tuscany) This is really enticing Rose Brut, and comparatively cheap. This Rose is very fresh, very strawberry and very effervescent. The bubbles are tight.  The flavors are delicate strawberry, with a finish of crisp blueberry. This sparkling is 50% Sangiovese which reveals a certain electricity of flavor when used as a base for dry sparkling wine. $21.00, ( chill 2 )
Guess I am being redundant, but this wine too drinks above its price point...there is a dry smoky, strawberry component that is awesome.  This is one of the very few sparkling wines from Tuscany that ever make it to the market.  It wins awards in Tuscany from all its peers - we learned that if a winery makes sparkling, they usually just drink it at the winery. This one was so good in the region, they started selling it!!  Winery also famous for their olive oil.  Michele

3. 2013 Buonamico Etichetta Blu Montecarlo Rosso
The 2013 Etichetta is a combination of Cabernet Sauvignon, Sangiovese, Carminolo and Syrah. The Etichette is a brambly composition of smokey plums and blackberry which cries out for a bit of roasted pork or sausages and chicken from the grill, supple tannins and long finish, sophisticated Asian spice! $19.50.
Rex called this one a transition wine...one to go from winter to spring!  A lot of black fruit going on.. a baby super Tuscan!  Another wine to buy by the case and have a party!!!  Michele
