Overcoming challenges, great retail job match

Meet Tamir at Best Buy in Apple Valley
Watch Tamir's story at Best Buy in Apple Valley

Cultural, physical and developmental obstacles have not stopped Tamir Tsogbaatar, who found a new job as a merchandiser at Best Buy in Apple Valley with some assistance from ProAct, and the state's Way to Work pilot project.

"He just has a really big drive and desire to succeed.  He really believes in himself and won't let anything stand in his way," said Designated Coordinator Matt Briggs.  A regular customer of the store and an experienced video-gamer, Tsogbaatar's interests found a direct match in the electronics retailer.  General Manager, Ron Szelag said the man's enthusiasm is infectious, and he interacts well with customers.

A native of Mongolia, his dreams are big and his goals admirable.  Tsogbaatar wants to own his own business, and teach people in developing countries about adaptive technologies that are beneficial to people with disabilities.
Parent group details concerns for day programs

The Minnesota Families and Advocates Coalition (MNFAC) spoke to a room full of ProAct parents and guardians in January about looming changes in the system that challenge day programs and in-center employment.

Co-chairs Julie St. Marie and Jim Clapper.  "In every way you can think of, they're trying to really dismantle employment DT&H ... trying to actually create three new employment programs," said Clapper.  "We need to really get the legislature, to try to really impress upon them that we need to change this stuff.
