Visionary legal thinker and social justice advocate, Bryan Stevenson is the founder and executive director of the Equal Justice Initiative (EJI) in Montgomery, Alabama. As a widely acclaimed public interest lawyer, he has dedicated his career to helping the poor, the incarcerated, and the condemned. In his keynote, "American Injustice: Mercy, Humanity, and Making a Difference," Stevenson will talk about defending some of America's most rejected and marginalized people, recounting stories of heartbreak and inspiration, while motivating change.
America has the largest prison population in the world, and under his leadership EJI has won major legal challenges in eliminating excessive and unfair sentencing, exonerating innocent death row prisoners, confronting the abuse of the incarcerated and the mentally ill, and aiding children prosecuted as adults. In 2012, EJI won a historic U.S. Supreme Court ruling--in Miller v. Alabama and its companion case Jackson v. Hobbs--holding that mandatory life-without-parole sentences for all children 17 or younger are unconstitutional.
Stevenson's work fighting poverty and challenging racial discrimination in the criminal justice system has won him numerous awards. He is a graduate of Harvard Law School and Harvard School of Government and recipient of 26 honorary doctorate degrees. He is the author of award-winning and New York Times bestseller, Just Mercy. In 2015, Stevenson was named to the Time 100 recognizing the world's most influential people. More recently, Fortune named him to its 2016 World's Greatest Leaders list.
"AALL is honored to have legal visionary Bryan Stevenson speak about the challenges of achieving a fair and equitable legal system," said AALL President Ronald E. Wheeler. "Legal information professionals understand those challenges; timely access to accurate, relevant legal information is everyone's right--regardless of income or geography--and one of our top priorities."
AALL wishes to thank this year's gold sponsors Bloomberg Law, LexisNexis, and Wolters Kluwer
Legal & Regulatory US for their generous support of the keynote address.
