This past Sunday was a wintry, blustery, wet cold day,and the Robins were loving it!
These fat fluffy Canadian cousins of our smaller Red Robins, were feasting on something in my yard. I enjoyed them flying by my windows, all bright and excited....but maybe I should have looked closer.
The next morning I got in my car, drove down the road and "FA-WAP"! These big, black, sloppy messes came flying up on my windshield. It was so gross...
They were coming off the hood of my car.... I actually had to pulled over to clean it, I couldn't see.
When I got back home, I saw the driveway was covered too. My car is black, my driveway too, I just didn't see them before. I asked my husband about this, being the Birder he is, and he told me they were eating the pet safe ice melt we had put on our driveway. I said "No way, that's what their doing? Isn't that bad?", and he stated that in the winter they need to fill their salt intake in order to survive...
I mentioned this to my boss here and he told me "That it is important to feed the birds a good bird seed like, Wild Delight Advanced Food in the winter, because it has all the nutrients that birds need to survive like sodium."
Now I see why Grackles flock and eat on the side of the road. Big O'l Huh!?
Sometimes I feel opaquely ignorant. I tell you, I learn something new every day.
