Rector's Reflections

A New Way to Follow
Nations wage war, gangs battle each other, political parties argue, families quarrel, communities of faith divide. We hear others say and even hear ourselves saying, "There is no other way."
In Jesus, the light of Gods kingdom draws near and a new way shines for us to follow.
In Sunday's gospel, Jesus first withdraws (Matt. 4:12). The word anachoreo (to withdraw) is used ten times in Matthew's gospel-each time as Jesus' response to violence or conflict. John the Baptist has been arrested, and tension is beginning to build. The way of God and the way of the world's rulers are beginning to collide.
In Jesus, a new kingdom has drawn near, a kingdom of nonviolence and non-retaliation. Jesus' withdrawal is not simply passivity but points to a vision of an alternate way of reigning as king. Jesus rules not with violence, abusive power, or through division but through voluntarily emptying himself of power, identifying with the oppressed and burdened, and healing that which is broken. Into this new reign, Jesus calls the disciples to follow him, a way that appears foolish and weak to those who cannot discern it. To those God calls, it is the wisdom and strength, the light and power of God.
To follow in the way of Jesus places one's life at risk, for it eventually leads to the cross. To follow, though, implies someone is leading. The way God calls us to follow has already been filled with the loving kindness and mercy of Jesus who has gone before us and who leads us to the foot of the cross. There, in the shadow of the cross, God makes a way for unity in the midst of division, for healing in the midst of brokenness, for peace in the midst of violence, for forgiveness in the midst of betrayal. Around the table, the kingdom of God draws near; Jesus' broken body announces forgiveness, healing, peace, and unity. Many bodies are nourished and formed into the one body of Christ, called and sent to follow in the way of Jesus, to be broken and shed for the sake of the world. [Sundays and Seasons, 2017]
See you in worship Sunday!

Our annual meeting will be held on Sunday, January 29th at 10:30 am following one combined worship service at 9:00 am.
An expanded coffee hour will be offered, so you can enjoy a warm beverage and refreshments during the meeting. We will receive the annual report of our ministry together, the ministry plan/budget for 2017, and elect vestry members. We hope you can join us!
Annual Meeting Affirmations
We Like good stewards of the manifold grace of God, serve one another with whatever gift each of you has received. [1 Peter 4:10]
We are looking to recognize Saints for faithful service to God in our parish at our annual meeting on Sunday, January 29th. Please contact the church office allsaints@metrocast.net or Pastor Bill to nominate individuals.
NEW BIBLE STUDY Starts on Thursday, January 5th.
Join us as we more deeply into God's Word. We will walk through Romans to bring contemporary application of Scripture to life. Discover how you can participate more fully in God's kingdom as we read through Paul's letter to the Romans. We gather Thursday afternoons 3:00-4:00 pm followed by a brief Eucharist in the Beck Memorial Library.
Wolfeboro Reads
Bryan Stevenson was a young lawyer when he founded the Equal Justice Initiative, a legal practice dedicated to defending those most desperate and in need: the poor, the wrongly condemned, and women and children trapped in the farthest reaches of our criminal justice system. One of his first cases was that of Walter McMillian, a young man who was sentenced to die for a notorious murder he insisted he didn't commit. The case drew Bryan into a tangle of conspiracy, political machination, and legal brinksmanship-and transformed his understanding of mercy and justice forever.
Just Mercy is at once an unforgettable account of an idealistic, gifted young lawyer's coming of age, a moving window into the lives of those he has defended, and an inspiring argument for compassion in the pursuit of true justice.

David Olson
|
Photo from Susan Olson's Facebook Page
David Olson was an artist whose works were sold internationally. He was also a loving husband of 49 years to Susan, and a gentle, caring father for their sons, Jason and Adam. David was an active member at All Saints. David and Susan could be found working the silent auction booth each year for the summer fair. We will honor his life at a
memorial service and reception at All Saints on
Saturday, January 21st at 11:00 AM.

Gerry DeGeorge
|
photo taken on Jan. 8, 2017
Gerry and her husband Larry built their home on Sawyer Point in 1984. That home was used as a summer residence until they retired and moved here permanently in 2000. Gerry began attending All Saints at that time and was confirmed as a church member by the Bishop in 2004. Gerry picked All Saints as her church because she felt the church had a strong commitment to social justice issues, and was involved in community outreach.
Gerry is presently Clerk of the Vestry. She is also the Convener of the Mission Outreach Team. She was a member of the original committee that determined the mission for the Outreach Building. She was a member of the Rector's Selection Committee, and presently is a Lector. She also prepares food for the 8 AM coffee hour. We have all benefited from Gerry's commitment to All Saints, and are grateful for her leadership.

Bree has been worshiping at All Saints since she moved to Wolfeboro this summer. Bree received her doctorate from Boston University, and for the past ten years she worked for several renewable energy companies in Russia. Amalie is a one and a half year old French Angora certified therapy rabbit. Bree stated that Amalie is intelligent. Patients at hospitals and nursing homes love to hold and pet her.
Bree's parents who live in the Minneapolis, Minnesota area are retiring and have recently purchased a home in Wolfeboro. They will be moving to Wolfeboro this summer.
We welcome Bree and Amalie, and are grateful that Bree has chosen to worship at All Saints.

Families in Transition
|
Dear Friends,
I wanted to update you regarding the progress with Hope House. The Superior Court hearing was held on Monday, January 9th. The judge has given each side until January 25th to submit final summaries to the court. Once the judge has this information, she will take everything in to consideration and make her decision. We were not given a date as to when she will be making her decision or letting us know her decision. We will be sure to let you know the MOMENT we know.
We've continued to develop the plans and specifications for the project and are moving forward with selecting a construction management company. I continue to have faith that Hope House will become a reality and I can't wait until we have the Open House and welcome in our first families.
