From Mr. Robinson

Hello, Boulevard Families,

This week, I want to remind the parents of our fourth graders about two important  events that are scheduled at Woodbury in the next couple of weeks. The Grade 4  Girls Mixer is scheduled for Wednesday, February 1 from 6:00-7:30 p.m., and the  Grade 4 Boys Mixer is scheduled for Wednesday, February 8 from 6:00-7:30 p.m.

The Grade 4 Mixers provide an opportunity for our fourth graders to meet their  future Woodbury classmates from around the District in a fun and engaging way.

High school students from Shaker’s Student Group On Race Relations (SGORR) will
lead the children in icebreaker and team-building games, giving them the  opportunity to reconnect with old friends, while possibly making some new ones as  well! I hope all of our current fourth graders have the chance to attend!

Thank you and have a wonderful weekend,
Neal Robinson

ELL Corner
Our Feature Country: Ghana

Hello! Next week Ghana is our country of the week! This country is on the West coast of Africa and has a population of 24 million, with the official language of the country being English. The climate in Ghana is tropical: it is hot and humid in the south and hot and dry in the north. The capital of Ghana is Accra. A popular Ghanian dish, Waakye (pronounced Wa Chi), is a rice and beans dish. Soccer is the most popular sport in this country. This country is ranked as Africa’s Most Peaceful Country by the Global Peace Index. Ghana is the world’s second largest producer of cocoa beans. Many Ghanians are named after the day of the week they are born! The currency is the Cedi.

Dear Parents, we would like to remind you that there is a large collection of bilingual books available in the ELL resource room, in what we call our World Languages Lending Library (WLLL). You may borrow these books for your child's (and your) reading enjoyment. Please contact Jill Lasheen to request some of these materials in your home language. Research is clear that the better a person knows their home language, the easier it is for them to learn a second language. Reading is a great way to learn language!

Around the World - Sharing our Cultures
February 23, 2017

ATTENTION INTERNATIONAL FAMILIES!
ATTENTION IF YOU ARE INTERESTED IN OTHER CULTURES!

Boulevard will again be holding this much-loved event to celebrate our diversity, our cultures, and our community spirit:

Around the World - Sharing our Cultures
Thursday Evening, 6:30 pm, February 23, 2017

Would you like to share a tradition from your home country (or a country you are familiar with or would like to research) that evening?  Stations will be set up around the school gym and multi-purpose room where you can share anything about your country such as: food, arts and crafts, words from your native language, board games, sports, music, dance, or an idea of your choice  All ideas are welcome! Students and their families who attend that evening will receive a “passport” and visit the stations to learn about the various countries. If you are interested in participating, please email aroundtheworldatboulevard@gmail.com.  Thank you!

Each week the Boulevard PTO publishes the Boulevard Friday Flyer highlighting school events for our families. If you have items to contribute to the flyer, please submit to boulevardfridayflyer@yahoo.com by 12 pm on Wednesdays.
