This course is designed to be of interest to physicians, physician assistants, nurse practitioners and other healthcare professionals involved in primary and specialty care for children.
Participants will learn how to better integrate primary and subspecialty care for children with acute or chronic disease.
At the conclusion of this conference, participants will understand and be able to implement the following:
- Describe implications of a unique service for helping grieving children.
- Implement strategies for diagnosis and management of polycystic ovary syndrome in teens.
- Describe national guidelines for sexually transmitted infection (STI) testing and treatment.
- Define expedited partner therapy (EPT) as a strategy for management of chlamydia and gonorrhea.
- Recognize ways to manage transgender/Gender questioning patients in pediatric practice and resources available for pediatricians to help support patients and families.
- Describe collaboration between primary and palliative care in pediatrics.
- Implement strategies of chronic pain management in the primary care pediatric practice.
- Review practices that can be utilized in pediatric care to maximize neurodevelopmental outcomes.
- Understand epidemiology, risk factors and clinical presentation of substance use disorders in adolescents and identify non-pharmacologic, pharmacologic and community-based resources to treat substance use disorders.
- Identify the early warning signs and presentation of an eating disorder and securing the appropriate resources to manage the patient with an eating disorder.
- Understand the diseases subsumed by the DSM V Somatic Symptom and Related Disorders disease. category, including risk factors, evaluation and management of the patient with significant somatization and functional symptoms (chronic fatigue, chronic headache, chronic abdominal pain, etc... without clear organic disease).
- Review key tips in assessment of heart murmurs in the pediatric population.
- Recognize key findings and “red flags” in pediatric EKGs.
- Identify controversies in primary prevention and strategies for secondary prevention of sudden cardiac death in the young.
