This month, we're discussing Windows new and old, and a change to a long-time partner!
Windows 10

Windows 10 has been changed to be a recommended update for users of Windows 7 and 8.1.  This means that, under default settings for updates, it is going to automatically download and prompt you to install.

If you make the decision to update to Windows 10 on your point of sale computers, be aware that there are risks in doing so of breaking configurations.  You'll want to make certain that you have a current backup of the database not on the computer.  You'll also want to do this on a day where support is available, in the event that minor cleanup is necessary.

The most frequent problems reported involve the printer drivers breaking.  You may need to reinstall printer drivers to fix this, even if the printer drivers are compatible.

If you do NOT want to update to Windows 10, then instructions on how to block the updates appear at  this site
Windows XP

On the other end of things, later this year we will likely be ending support for Windows XP with new versions of the product.  We are currently accessing the impact to customers as a whole, but Microsoft stopped supporting Windows XP in April 2014, and in order to continue to update the software and its design we are going to need to do the same.

If you are on XP and want to update computers, contact Sales at (919) 387-7597 x100.  We are running specials to help people get off of this edition of Windows so that they can continue to get updates to ExtremePOS, Musicware, and Praiz - $200 off on computers for existing users needing to update through the end of February 2016.
Mercury Payment Systems Re-branding As Vantiv

Our recommended integrated credit card processor, Mercury Payment Systems, is now known as Vantiv Integrated Payments.  While this won't have an immediate impact on existing users, be aware that menu options will change to reflect this in future versions.

If you are not using integrated credit card processing, we have both EMV/NFC (chip and mobile) solutions and solutions simply using a normal reader available for now.  New deployments for the latter will eventually be cut off as security requirements tighten.  Contact us for more information on these solutions.
Upcoming Update

Version 3.6.0 of ExtremePOS, Musicware, and Praiz is releasing later this month, alongside new versions of Store Server, Corp Server, and Corporate.  Included in this is a number of requested smaller features and changes.  These include:
  • The ability to close purchase orders that have no received items
  • The ability to change customer numbers at Corporate for enterprise users
  • A new report for comparing inventory levels at Corporate between stores based on a threshold of minimum levels
  • Added ability to search by street date in inventory
  • Added option to unselect associated customer from employee, rather than having to select a new one
  • Added total quantities under sales history tab in inventory maintenance
  • A number of minor changes to error handling and messages to attempt to provide clearer error messages for some common situations.  Efforts will be ongoing in this area for future versions.
  • Fixes to block deleting certain key items at the corporate level
  • Additional fields on several reports in ExtremePOS
  • Several modifications related to Ecommerce portions of Store Server
  • Made improvements to attempt to compensate for inconsistent wireless connections.  Wired connections are still highly recommended where feasible.
The current version of the software, available for supported users, is 3.5.6.  If you want to get back on support, contact sales at (919) 387-7597 x100.
