Announcements and Updates for February 8,  2017
 For your calendar...

BIBLE STUDY
On Wednesday evenings in February, Pastor Julie will lead a Bible Study entitled: "Neglected Voices: Biblical Spirituality on the Margins." Come and learn about how God works in and through some of the lesser known characters in Scriptures.  Tonight we will learn more about Shiphrah & Puah, Nathan, and the man born blind.   Come as you are able....each class stands on its own.

LOVE LETTERS
There are many in our neighborhood who feel unappreciated or even, afraid.  Our call is to share the love of God with all of our neighbors.  This Sunday, February 12th, we will have an "offering of love letters"...an opportunity for you to write a simple encouraging word to communities at risk, under attack, or under-appreciated.  Examples include our local mosque, the teachers at Broadview Thomsen, the crossing guard across from our school, etc.  We'll have all of the supplies needed...so stop by the table and share a word of LOVE!

WELLNESS MINISTRY:  BLOOD PRESSURE CHECKS
On the third Sunday of each month (unless otherwise noted) Lollie Ellingson, LPN, will be available thirty minutes before and after worship for blood pressure checks.

REFORMATION BOOKSTORE
On March 5th and March 12th LMLC will host an Augsburg Fortress Reformation Bookstore in the narthex.  Come check out these excellent sources of information about the Reformation and how the church is still reforming today.

FIRST SUNDAY FAITH FORUM: NEIGHBORS IN FAITH
On March 5th, we will welcome Pastor Terry Kyllo, pastor of Neighbors in Faith, the pastor of a joint effort of the NW Washington synod, the SW Washington synod, and the Episcopal Diocese of Olympia.  Neighbors in Faith examines and encourages our relationships with our Muslim sister and brothers.

HAPPY 65TH BIRTHDAY, LUTHER MEMORIAL!
Mark your calendars now for our 65th birthday celebration on March 26th!  We will welcome Bishop Kirby Unti in worship, along with other friends and neighbors.  Following worship there will be a catered lunch ($10 suggested donation).  RESERVATIONS will be necessary!  Watch for details in the March Messenger and March bulletin inserts.

From Pastor Julie -
Beloved Community,

Were you surprised to wake up to SNOW on Monday morning?  I was!  Oh sure, they'd predicted snow...but how often has it happened that snow is in the forecast, but never materializes on the ground?

I had actually planned to work on Monday, which is usually my Sabbath Day.  I was going to represent you at the grand opening of Ronald Commons, a Compass Housing Alliance affordable housing project just to our north in Shoreline.  I also had scheduled another meeting at the church.  As it turns out, neither of those events took place.  It was official, we had a snow day on our hands!

Just before lunch Bruce and I donned our snow boots, hats, and gloves and set out for a walk.  The world was very quiet.  The snow crunched under our feet.  When we returned to our own yard we made the snow-person you see pictured at the top of this Mid Week Update, who we could see out of our kitchen window, cheerily looking back at us.

That snow day was so unexpected.  It felt like a gift of grace....unexpected, unearned and restorative to the soul.  I think this is what the idea of Sabbath is meant to be:  time that is empty of schedule and commitment....time that is empty enough to fill us.

May you find days and times that fill you in many ways.

See you in church,
Pastor Julie+

Sunday's Scripture Readings:
First Reading
Deuteronomy 30:15-20
The Lord sets before the people of God a clear choice. Life and prosperity will come to the faithful; loss of the land will be the consequence of disobedience. Choosing life entails loving and holding fast to the Lord. Life in God's presence presupposes the promise made to the ancestors.

Second Reading
1 Corinthians 3:1-9
Human leaders in the church are not the ones who control ministry. Rather they are fellow workers who belong to God, the one who truly controls and continuously empowers the ministry of the church.

Gospe l
Matthew 5:21-37
In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus exhorts his followers to embrace standards of righteousness that exceed legal requirements and traditional expectations.
