National Resource Center
Celebrates Milestone

This month, the Robert F. Kennedy National Resource Center for Juvenile Justice celebrates its three year anniversary. We are grateful for the level of interest exhibited from an ever-expanding number of local, state and federal agencies and organizations which has resulted in a plethora of partnership opportunities, projects and initiatives - many of which will be launched in early 2017 - to improve the lives of children and families. It is worth noting a number of the new projects and initiatives that reflect our strong commitment to partnering in the field and continue the steadfast advance toward improved practice. These efforts provide replicable lessons for us all to implement on behalf of our youth and families:
  • Dual Status Youth field-based training for eight deserving and committed jurisdictions
  • Probation System Review (PSR) projects in Milwaukee County, WI; El Paso County, TX; and Clark County, NV; which follow the completion of PSR efforts in two sites in Idaho, three sites in Arkansas, and the Territory of Guam in 2016
  • Continuation of our partnership with the Council of State Governments in providing technical assistance in 5 states through the OJJDP Smart on Crime: Community Supervision and Reentry grant and in presenting the 3rd annual Juvenile Probation Reform Academy
  • Partnering with the Judicial Council of California to facilitate the efforts of the legislatively established Dual Status Youth Data Standards Committee, charged with identifying common outcomes and standardized definitions for California's dual status youth
  • Launch of the RFK National Resource Center's Juvenile Justice and Education Partnership Initiative with the counsel of an extraordinary Advisory Group (initial meeting occurred in December 2016)
Agency Awarded Funding

RFK Children's Action Corps is pleased to announce we have received funding for the following programs and initiatives:

Detention Diversion Advocacy Program
We were awarded a grant from the Yawkey Foundation II in the amount of $25,000 to support our Detention Diversion Advocacy Program (DDAP) in the Boston area. Their contribution will help ensure that DDAP staff are fully prepared to help participating youth receive the educational services to which they have a right; serve as consistent, stable adult figures with the knowledge and training to both guide and take part in communication with the schools; ensure youth receive needed educational support and reinforce positive behavior in school and the community; and help disrupt the school-to-prison pipeline.

High Risk Youth Network
Our program, the High Risk Youth Network (HRYN), was the recipient of a $5,000 grant from the MAXIMUS Foundation to deliver trainings in community-based settings about trauma and its effects, including information about available resources to address trauma.

HRYN is a resource for organizations and providers serving youth at high risk in the City of Boston.   HRYN provides invaluable benefits and information to its member agencies that are designed to help providers strengthen connections, collaborations and communities.  For more information about benefits and how to become a member, click here.

Since 1975, MAXIMUS has operated under its founding mission of Helping Government Serve the PeopleĀ®, enabling citizens around the globe to successfully engage with their governments at all levels and across a variety of health and human services programs. As the philanthropic arm of MAXIMUS, the Foundation provides grants to local community organizations with programs and projects in the areas of child and youth development, health and community development.

Professional Development
Additionally, we received a $1,500 grant from the Jason Hayes Foundation to support in-house staff trainings focused on working with lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and questioning (LGBTQ) youth. Education and training on LGBTQ issues are vital to providing safe and appropriate care to the young people in our programs. Developing strategies for instilling fairness and eliminating bias against LGBTQ families and children is one of the important goals of this work.

Thank you to all of our donors who help fund the work critical to successfully serving the children and families in our care!

Way to Go!

During their recent annual quality assurance review, the NYPUM (National Youth Project Using Minibikes) program at our Lancaster Campus achieved 5 Gear Status, receiving a 19/19 PERFECT SCORE for 2016!!  Thanks to all of our certified staff who go above and beyond to provide this unique incentive-based learning opportunity for our kids!

Community

Congratulations to Bose, who was named RFK Children's Action Corps' Corporate Volunteer of the Year for 2016! Throughout the year, nearly 100 volunteers from the company generously gave of their time landscaping, painting, and facilitating a birdhouse building workshop at our Lancaster Campus. We greatly appreciate their continued support!
