Dear Parents,
Happy Catholic Schools Week! We kicked off this special week with several events on Sunday. Thank you to all whose children attended the 10:30 Mass at St. Catherine's in their SCS uniform: you looked great! Thank you to our student readers and gift bearers: you did an awesome job! Thank you to Mrs. Khan and members of our choirs who sang at the monthly children's Liturgy at St. Clare's: your beautiful voices lifted the hearts and minds of all who were present. And, thank you to our families and students who assisted with the collection of food for the St. Vincent de Paul Society during the weekend Masses: your generous help will make a positive difference in the lives of the needy within our community.
There are so, so many things that I can share with you about this exciting week. Yesterday, our students and teachers were joined by a few parents as we gathered in the gym at the end of the school day for a time of Adoration of our Eucharistic Jesus: we prayed and sang and simply opened our hearts to Christ. Today, our eighth grade students are engaged in a work of mercy as they visit with and serve cancer patients at the Our Lady of Perpetual Help Home near downtown Atlanta. Tomorrow, classes of students will partner up with prayer buddies to share prayer intentions and promise to hold each other up in prayer for the remainder of this school year.
While special events such as the ones mentioned above grab our attention, the many daily blessings which we enjoy can go unnoticed and unappreciated. Throughout this school year, so many of our parents have given of their time, talent, and treasure in countless ways. In particular, at this time, I want to thank all the volunteers who have been working very hard to prepare for our Gala Auction - it is going to be a fabulous event!
Our teachers and staff, too, daily give of themselves with energy and enthusiasm - it is such a joy for me to wander into a classroom and see our students in action, engaging in well-planned and rigorous lessons; and, it is a powerful experience to listen to the conversations which take place at our monthly cross-grade-level meetings during which teachers discuss ways to improve learning among our students.
Later this week, a couple of our alumni will come to speak to our Middle School students. Lucas Mejia (class of 2011) and Nico Mejia (class of 2009) will share the story of their journey from adolescence into adulthood: it is the story of two young men who have weathered through tragedies and struggles in their young lives but who have also received the invaluable gift of love and faith from their family as well as the formation they received at SCS. Lucas and Nico are now young entrepreneurs who recently started their own clothing business. They will talk to our students about the path by which they discovered their God-given talents and embarked on their dream career. They will testify to the amazing truth that each of us is deeply loved by God and that our lives are profoundly meaningful.
Truly, we have a lot for which to be grateful here at SCS. For all these blessings, let us offer thanks to our Father in Heaven. Let us take to heart the words of St. John Bosco, patron saint of youth, whose feast day we celebrate today:
Remember that education is a matter of the heart, of which God is the sole master, and we will not be able to achieve anything unless God teaches us, and puts the key in our hands.
God bless you,
Sister Mary Jacinta, O.P.
Principal
P.S. Please note the updates for the out-of-uniform days this week:
Thursday will be "Sports Jerseys / Black-and-Red (Falcons)" Day (students may wear Falcons attire OR any sports jerseys of their choice) and
Friday will be a regular out-of-uniform day
to celebrate meeting our Food Drive goal of 500 cans of goods.

Notes from the Nurse
GASTROENTERITIS
The winter months have the clinic in full swing! Unfortunately, a stomach virus has made way to many of our classrooms in the past week. Often referred to as the "stomach flu", viral gastroenteritis results in vomiting and/or diarrhea. The affected person may also have a headache, fever, and abdominal cramps / stomachache.
Viral gastroenteritis is contagious and is spread easily through close contact with infected persons (for example: by sharing food, drinks, eating utensils, poor hand washing before meals and after using the bathroom, eating or drinking contaminated foods or beverages).
If your child is complaining of a stomachache tonight or in the morning before school, please consider keeping him/her home. If your child was sent home from school due to vomiting and/or diarrhea, they must remain at home for 24 hours from the time they last vomited and until the diarrhea is controlled. Please do not assume that "no fever" means they are ready to return. Upon return to school, students should be eating and drinking normally. Continue to reinforce hand washing with your children as this is the most effective way of reducing the risk of infection.
Be assured that the faculty and staff at St. Catherine's are doing everything possible to disinfect the classrooms multiples times daily, as well as the entire school environment, to prevent further spread of this illness. This includes wiping down all hard surfaces and door handles with approved disinfectants, as well as enforcing frequent hand washing among all students.
As always, we are here to help in the clinic in any way we can! Please feel free to contact us at [email protected].
Thank you and have a healthy week!
