2017 is off to a great start here at Muskingum!  Our Spring semester is now in full swing, as our students returned to campus and began their new classes on Monday, January 9. 
MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR. DAY OF SERVICE

"Life's most persistent and urgent question is 'What are you doing for others?'" - Martin Luther King, Jr.

Our students began their semester in outreach to our neighbors by participating in the national Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service on January 16.  They volunteered throughout Muskingum and Guernsey counties at food banks, community centers, church-based service ministries, and other non-profit organizations dedicated to improving the quality of life in our surrounding communities.

IGNITING STUDENT ENTREPRENEURSHIP
By bringing together students, faculty, and alumni experts, our new Entrepreneurial Ignition Program is helping students develop their business ideas and launch new ventures. 

One of its first start-ups - Jennings' Java Artisan Coffee Roasters, founded by Daniel Jennings '19 to provide fresh-roasted premium hand-picked beans to coffee-lovers on campus and in New Concord - was recently featured in the  Times-Recorder . The President's Office is now serving Jennings' Java Artisan Coffee and can attest to its exceptional quality!  
 
The entrepreneurial program was created by Assistant Professor of Computer Science Jay Shaffstall, Associate Professor of Digital Media Design Tom German, and Associate Professor of Business Gary Golden.
 
MUSKINGUM TESOL PROGRAM EARNS NATIONAL HONORS 
 
Our 7-week intensive TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) Summer Program has been recognized with the 2016 Rose Duhon-Sells Multicultural Program Award from the National Association for Multicultural Education.  Muskingum's program prepares licensed teachers to meet the needs of English language learners during summer education camps provided to immigrant students from six school districts. Congratulations to Muskingum's Nancy Brown Rothwell Distinguished Professor of Education Dr. Joy Cowdery - who coordinates our TESOL teacher preparation program and spearheaded the creation of the summer camps - and to everyone involved with this critical educational effort.  The University, TESOL Program, and Dr. Cowdery were further honored by the Ohio Senate upon receiving this important award.
MUSKIE SPORTS NOW SIMULCAST LIVE ON FACEBOOK

We are excited to announce another new way for you to enjoy live action Muskie sports. All home athletic HD broadcasts which stream on fightingmuskies.com will also be simulcast live on the Fighting Muskies Facebook page .  Visit www.fightingmuskies.com for the complete schedule of broadcasts.  The current winter season features men's and women's basketball and men's wrestling contests.

HIDDEN FIGURES 
More than 200 Muskies watched the recently-released film Hidden Figures at a private screening in Zanesville on January 23.  The film tells the story of three pioneering African-American women mathematicians -  Katherine Johnson, Dorothy Vaughan, and Mary Jackson - who served NASA as "human computers" during the early 1960s.  John Glenn and his 1962 orbit of the earth figure prominently in the film, as Katherine Johnson was responsible for the calculations that led to his historic flight.

We have been enjoying gatherings with alumni and friends in various places across the nation, including the wonderful group from Naples, Florida pictured here.  We have additional receptions for alumni and friends planned around our spring Concert Choir Tour including:
