New sheriff, Common Pleas judge
|

Changing of the guard at Sheriff's Office as Steve Leahy takes command
 Steve Leahy was sworn in as the new Clermont County sheriff at 12:01 a.m. Jan. 2 at Amelia High School by outgoing Sheriff
Tim Rodenberg. Sheriff Leahy then swore in the entire Sheriff's Office. Sheriff Rodenberg retired after serving 20 years as sheriff.
Sheriff Leahy
began his career in law enforcement in 1991 as a road patrol deputy with the Sheriff's Office. At various points, he was commander of the court services division; investigative sergeant; and investigative lieutenant. He supervised both investigations and the narcotics unit. In 2013 he was promoted to the rank of captain. He became Chief Deputy of Operations in June of 2014.

 Judge Anthony Brock was sworn in as a Common Pleas judge on Dec. 29.
Judge Brock became a lawyer in 1993. He worked as an assistant prosecutor in the county for 12 years, and was appointed to a vacancy in Municipal Court in 2006, where he served until his recent election to Common Pleas. Judge Brock replaces Judge
Thomas Herman, who retired after 25 years at both Municipal and Common Pleas courts. At right he is with his family: daughter

Humphrey leads CCAO in 2017

"I'm honored to have been chosen to help guide CCAO's leadership as we work to achieve our mission of advancing effective county government," Humphrey said. "Counties provide services to residents in critical areas, such as justice and public safety, workforce preparedness, protecting children from abuse and neglect, administering elections, serving vulnerable Ohioans and maintaining roads and bridges. We operate as creatures of state statute and thus rely upon a strong state partnership. Acting through CCAO, we advocate for adequate funding to provide these vital services, seek flexibility to provide services more efficiently, and the ability to eliminate certain unfunded mandates and outdated functions."

Commissioner Bob Proud, completing his 28th year of service to Clermont County, had a farewell tour of sorts in December, saying goodbye to many colleagues, friends and well-wishers. Here is a profile of Mr. Proud, who will now become a stay-at-home dad to his young son, Michael, above. Resolve to be prepared in 2017
|

For 2017, why not include a resolution to get prepared?
- Get informed about the different hazards that could occur in your community. Learn the appropriate response to the risks that you and your family may face.
- Create a family emergency plan. You and your loved ones may not be together when a disaster strikes, so it is important to plan in advance. Develop a plan on how you will communicate with one another, how and where you will reconnect, and what you will do in each type of emergency.
- Build an emergency supply kit. Following a disaster, it may take time for power to be restored and emergency workers to reach your community. It's important to have an emergency supply kit with food, water, and other necessary supplies to last a minimum of three days.
- Get involved in emergency preparedness. Spread the preparedness message with relatives, friends and neighbors. Preparedness is contagious.

Clermont County Park District offers several events in January and early February:
Tuesday, Jan. 10: Homeschool Program: Winter Tree Identification (9:30-11 a.m.; Sycamore Park). This program is open to homeschooled children and will focus on using bark and other unique characteristics to identify trees in the winter. To register your child, please contact naturalist

Saturday, Jan. 21: Animal Tracks and Signs Hike (10-11 a.m.; Crooked Run Preserve). On this hike, we will talk about how to identify different animal tracks and look for clues that animals leave behind of their presence. After our hike, we will provide hot chocolate and a snack.
Saturday, Feb. 4: Wonderful Wetlands Hike (10-11 a.m.; Shor Park). Wetlands are unique and important ecosystems that have not always been appreciated and understood. Join us on this hike to learn more about wetlands. This event is free and open to the public.

Planning Commission seeks members
|
|
Applications are now being accepted to fill a vacant position on the Clermont County Planning Commission. The duties of this commission include the development, updates, application, and enforcement of the Clermont County Subdivision Regulations, recommendations to various township zoning authorities (pertaining to changes in their local zoning regulations), and other land use planning initiatives.
Clermont County Planning Commission members are appointed by the Board of Clermont County Commissioners (BCC) for a term of three years and no members are permitted to serve for more than two consecutive terms. The Commission meets at 5 p.m. on the fourth Tuesday of each month.

 DD NAMES VOLUNTEERS OF THE YEAR:
Doug Young and Nicole Nicodemus of Clermont County Juvenile Probation were presented with the 2016 Clermont DD "Volunteer of the Year" award on Nov. 3. For several years, Doug and Nikki, both at left, have joined with Clermont DD to produce a one-day event called "Fishing with a Friend." This event pairs teens from Juvenile Probation with children and adults from DD; the groups get to know each other while they fish in a fully-stocked lake provided by the Southern Ohio Coon Hunters on Elmwood Road in Stonelick Township. This year's event was on Oct. 7, and more than 80 children and adults from Clermont DD enjoyed catching fish in the lake, eating lunch with their friends, and making memories with the teens from Juvenile Probation that will last a lifetime.
NEW ADDITION AT PUBLIC HEALTH: Brian Ward has joined Clermont Public Health as the new injury prevention coordinator. Brian will be working under the Injury Prevention grant focusing on reducing the number of drug overdoses in Clermont County . He is also a member of the Clermont County Opiate Task Force.
PAINT YOUR BARRELS:
All artists, including students and seasoned professionals, are invited to apply to be part of the fifth annual Rain Barrel Art Project, an initiative designed to educate the community about water conservation and pollution caused by storm water runoff. Designs are due by Jan. 20.

NEW VETERANS COMMISSIONER: Donald Shepherd
of Batavia will be the new Disabled American Veteran (DAV) Commissioner beginning Jan. 15. He will be joining Commissioners Robert Derr (Am Vets), Cliff Riley (Vietnam Veterans of America), Ken Cook (Veterans of Foreign Wars), and Thomas Cooper (American Legion).

- The National Weather Service will present two programs about flooding at the New Richmond Library, one for children at 10 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 21; and one for adults at 6:30 p.m. Monday, Jan. 30.
