Scientists are the miracle workers of the 21st century. They have split the atom, exploded the H-bomb, landed men on the moon, machines on Mars and revealed the structure of DNA, the genetic code that governs the form and function of every living thing.  For more than a decade, with increasing success, molecular biologists all over the world have been struggling to answer a question as old as death:  Why do we age and what, if anything, can we do to slow the process down?  To nature, individuals are important only as a means of continuing the species.  Nature wants individuals to survive long enough to produce offspring and take care of them until they in turn can do the same.  Having said that, humans from the time of   Ponce de León and before have searched for the "fountain of youth".

Recently, there has been some fascinating findings.  Scientist in California have identified the genes that make skin age and are working on substances that reverse the process and may open the way to wrinkle-free future for the human race.. Still others tweak the molecular switches that turn genes on and off.  In 2009, Elizabeth H. Blackburn, Carol W. Greider and Jack W. Szostak won the Nobel Price in medicine for their discovery of the effect of telomere length of chromosomes...( telomeres are end conective pieces of chromosomes) They concluded that whenever a cell divides, it loses between five and 20 telomere segments.   If the telomeres are shortened, cells age. Conversely, if telomerase activity is high, telomere length is maintained, and cellular senescence is delayed.  Telomere Nobel Price.
