Meet Coebourn's School Counselor
  Ms. Small

Hello! My name is Nicole Small and I am currently in my 9 th year as the School Counselor at Coebourn. Prior to this, I was a high school counselor at Oxford Area High School. I am also an alumni and graduate of Penn-Delco School District. I obtained by undergraduate degree in Human Development and Family Studies from Penn State University. After Penn State, I continued my education, completing my Masters in K-12 School Counseling from West Chester University. In addition, I completed my Home & School Visitor Certification at Widener University and the coursework to acquire my K-12 principal certification. Currently, I am studying for the School Leadership Assessment which will help me obtain my K-12 Principal Certification.   I strive to assist every student at Coebourn to be successful. I work with students in individual counseling, group counseling, and classroom lessons.   Additionally, I am the PBIS coach at Coebourn. This role entails leading our team to implement the 3 R's and its components. One of my biggest beliefs is that the school and family are a team. We work together to help students be the best they can be. One way we can achieve this is by organizing parent and student events. Please keep your eyes out for information about our Girls Night being held in March 2017. The purpose is to assist Penn Delco girls in grades 3-5 and their adult mentor with building resiliency in our girls. This event is provided on a rotating basis so if you have an elementary boy, look for the Boys Night in Spring 2018.
In my spare time, I like to read, play board games, take nature walks/hikes, and go to Ocean City, MD with my 3.5 year old son Brayden. I enjoy spending time with family and friends including watching my niece and nephews' sporting events.
As always, I am here to support our students, families, and staff to ensure our students have a wonderful school experience.

COEBOURN READERS

Coebourn once again is participating in Scholastic Reading Counts!
The goal of Reading Counts is to create lifelong readers by surrounding students with a wide variety of leveled literature and nonfiction texts in the classroom, in the school library, and at home. With Scholastic Reading Counts! students have a Lexile®-based independent reading program that tracks their success on the books they read, in and out of school. This technology-based program creates a personalized and engaging learning environment that ensures independent reading accountability. Scholastic Reading Counts intends to MOTIVATE students with suggested reading choices that match their interests and reading levels. This program is available to all 2nd through 5th grade students. Students in 2nd grade have a goal of 20,000 words read per month, while students in grades 3-5 are set to reach 30,000 words. Students may choose an independent book and when finished t take a ten question computerized quiz on the book. Seven out of the ten questions must be  answered correctly in order for the students to pass the quiz. The total number of words for the book read will be tracked throughout the year. If the book does not a Reading Counts quiz, students may write a summary of the book to receive credit. Any student who reaches 1,000,000 words will  be recognized both at school and at Brookhaven Borough Council!
Stay tuned......More to come next month about READING COUNTS!!

The Wonderful World of 2nd  Grade
Second grade has been very busy this winter.  The students have read many stories-both fictional and informational. One of the highlights was our trip to the Arden Theatre to see some of our favorite characters, Frog and Toad, come to life on stage.  The second graders have also been learning to write to persuade.  They collaboratively wrote a letter to Mr. Kuminka and are now working on individual letters.  Double digit addition and subtraction has been our focus in math.  But, keep on practicing those basic facts too!  Finally, the second graders have been learning all about geography in social studies.  We learned how to use a physical and political map.   Don't forget to fill in those reading logs every night!
G.R.I.T STUDENTS
Who was seen showing GRIT this month?

Aubrey Carney  has shown GRIT! Aubrey worked very hard on a tough writing assignment. She also went back and reread what she wrote to double check!
Paige Keeley has shown GRIT! Paige always gives every task her all. She never gives up and takes pride in her work! - Ms. Snyder
Chloe Graham has shown GRIT! This year she is working really hard on all of her sounds and never gives up! - Mrs. Michels
Nessa Nawn has shown GRIT! Nessa consistently pushes herself to improve. Nessa works hard to develop her ideas and goes the extra mile to improve her writing when revising. Her GRIT has made her a better writer! - Mrs. Lachman
Peyton Boyer  has shown GRIT! She never gives up, and always tries her best. If she gets something wrong, she keeps trying until she fully understands it! Way to go Peyton!- Ms. Kuhn

LOST & FOUND

There are hoodies, coats, sweaters and jackets looking for their owner!!
Have your child take a look if you are missing something.
A NOTE FROM THE NURSE

It is important to maintain a healthy environment in the classroom to protect all students, especially during the cold and flu season. Please seriously evaluate your child's health and ability to be productive in school when he or she complains of a headache, stomach pain, sore throat, or cold symptoms without a fever. Children often have no fever in the morning, but as the day progresses can develop a fever. Keeping your sick child at home will help him/her recover sooner and will help to prevent the spread of germs to others. The following symptoms may indicate a contagious illness:
Strep throat symptoms usually include a sore, red throat (often without other cold symptoms), pus on the tonsils, swollen neck glands, and fever. They may also include headache, stomachache, nausea, and/or vomiting, and skin rash. Your doctor will diagnose strep throat by the presenting symptoms and from a throat culture.
Influenza symptoms (also known as the flu) is a contagious respiratory illness caused by flu viruses. It can cause mild to severe illness. The flu is different from a cold. The flu usually comes on suddenly and can have the following symptoms: fever, cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, muscle or body aches, headaches, fatigue, some may have vomiting, diarrhea, though this is more common in children than adults. See your primary care physician about a flu vaccine if you have not done so.
DO NOT SEND YOUR CHILD TO SCHOOL IF:
Temperature is 100 F or above. They should be fever free without the use of medication for 24 hours before returning to school.
He/she has vomited or had diarrhea in the last 24 hours.
The child is prescribed an antibiotic medication. He/she must receive the proper dose(s) of the medication for 24 hours before returning to school.

Please teach our children to cough into their elbow or shoulder so as to not spread germs and have them wash their hands often.
