Understanding Section 12 and 35: The Process, Decision Making, and Ethics 

Join the Behavioral Health Provider Coalition on Thursday, February 23rd, 2017 for the panel discussion "Understanding Section 12 and 35".  This panel discussion for professionals working in behavioral health and related fields will take a closer look at the civil commitment laws in Massachusetts, the legal and medical process of sectioning, and ethical issues for professionals.  Our panel brings local and state-wide expertise and will present information individually, followed by an audience question and answer session.

Our panelists:

  • Dr. Syed Moosvi - Medical Director, Cape Cod & Islands Community Mental Health Center, Department of Mental Health.
  • Hon. Judge Christopher Welch - Falmouth District Court and Fall River Drug Court
  • Patricia Durgin - Program Manager at Centers for Behavioral Health Partial Hospital Program and Human Rights Officer for Cape Cod Healthcare
  • A peer with lived experience in the sectioning process

This program is free to attend, but registration is required.  
CEUs are available for nursing, LICSW, and EMS for $15.

At the end of this session, attendees will be able to:

  1. Describe the involuntary hospitalization process on a state, local, and individual level.
  2. Outline the process of civil commitment for substance use in Massachusetts, and list three ways it can impact individuals and family members.
  3. Identify legal and ethical responsibilities associated with civil commitment in Massachusetts
