DCIM ON A SHOESTRING BUDGET
TIM KITTILA
In order to optimize something, it needs to first be measured and then controlled. This statement certainly applies to optimizing data centers too. Through data center infrastructure management (DCIM), organizations can measure, control and optimize data center operations and ultimately reduce risk, reduce costs and increase efficiency.

While most data center facilities managers agree DCIM would help them optimize their data center operations, purchasing DCIM software often becomes a low priority in terms of budget and resources - despite the potential payback. Fortunately, with some time and effort, there are ways to implement DCIM without the expenditure of off-the-shelf software. In the first of a two-part series, we'll explore the strategies that organizations can use to optimize data center operations on a "shoestring budget."
