January 2017
Photo of the Month

The January Photo of the Month is from our Festival of Cheese that we celebrated at our Waterloo store Dec. 3. A big thank-you to all who came out to try our Wisconsin cheeses, holiday hams, egg nog, coffee and peppermint soft-serve ice cream cones! Check out the article below to read about some of the award-winning cheeses we carry.

We'd like to congratulate our door prize winners: Susan Hathaway (cheese basket), Lucinda Lear (half-ham) and Chris Peters ($25 gift certificate). Cheers to another dairy-filled year in 2017!

Cash Cow

There was one $5 winner in our CA$H COW contest last month -- Kay Alferink of Jesup! Our big contest starts over in the new year, so this month there will be just one $100 jug out there. Best chance to find it is right away at the beginning of the month! But make sure to keep looking throughout the month as we mark ten $5 jugs every week!

Look inside the jug toward the label to see a "5" or "100".

New look, same great ice cream!
New container (left) and old container
If you're a fan of our ice cream, you may have noticed a new look inside our freezers. With the help of a USDA grant, we have changed some of our ice cream containers! The new packages are oval-shaped, paperboard containers with a plastic sealed lid. Don't worry, the ice cream recipes haven't changed, and the container still holds the same amount of ice cream (64 fl. oz). So far we have printed Vanilla and Chocolate half-gallon containers; look for more pre-printed flavors to come in the future. Each flavor will feature different photos on the backside that help tell the story of Hansen's Dairy.
Cheese
You don't have to be a Cheesehead to enjoy Wisconsin cheese

Did you know you can get some of the best Wisconsin cheeses without going to Wisconsin? All three Hansen's Dairy locations have an on-hand supply of cheeses that we personally drive to Wisconsin to pick up. All of the cheeses we have selected are from award-winning creameries and are purchased directly through the creamery that made the cheese.

Most of our cheeses come from Cedar Grove, Maple Leaf, Carr Valley, Chalet, and Arena. All of the following creameries have won multiple awards for their cheeses and some with world recognition.

Cedar Grove Cheese: In December 1993, Cedar Grove Cheese became the first in the country to assure its customers that its products were rBGH-free.  Recombinant Bovine Growth Hormone, or rBGH, is a synthetic hormone used by some farmers to increase milk production.  We believe that consumers wishing to avoid dairy products containing milk from rBGH-treated cows should have that choice.  Although the FDA has determined that rBGH is safe, many consumers have indicated that for a wide variety of personal, social or political reasons, they want to buy dairy products made from milk produced by untreated cows. Cedar Grove -- 42 Awards

Maple Leaf Cheese: Creating quality Wisconsin cheese has been a tradition at Maple Leaf Cheese for 100 years. With two certified Wisconsin Master Cheesemakers, there is no better place to buy artisan and traditional Wisconsin cheeses. Maple Leaf -- 60 Awards

Carr Valley Cheese Company: Owned and operated by the Cook family, Carr Valley Cheese Company is more than 100 years old. Nestled among the rolling hills and lush pastures of  central Wisconsin, Carr Valley Cheese remains one of Wisconsin's traditional  cheese plants, famous for making cheese the old-fashioned way. Carr Valley -- 382 Awards

Chalet Cheese Cooperative: Founded in 1885 by five dairy farmers, Chalet Cheese Cooperative continues to flourish as a cooperative, owned and operated by 21 members who are the sole suppliers of its milk. Their supply has a unique blend of 75% Holstein and 25% Brown Swiss milk. They specialize in Limburger, Brick, Baby Swiss, and Swiss, and their smoked versions. They are the only producers of Limburger in the United States, and their German Brick with a Limburger smear underscores their spirit for innovation. Chalet Cheese -- 107 Awards

Arena Cheese Factory: Arena Cheese, one of Wisconsin's oldest cheese plants, is located in the Wisconsin River Valley within the lush, green, rolling hills of the Spring Green area. Arena's cheesemakers have crafted their authentic Colby-Jack cheese in the same location with the same recipe and cheesemaking techniques since its discovery more than three decades ago. Arena Cheese -- 21 Awards

If you attended our Festival of Cheese last month, you would have tasted most of these cheeses. We carry cheeses to please every palate! We also carry cheddar cheese from WW Homestead Creamery in Waukon, Iowa, and of course our delicious cheddar cheese curds!

Customer of the Month
Johna, Elsie and Matthew Schildroth
The January Customer of the Month is Johna Schildroth of Cedar Falls.

Johna and her husband, Matthew, are big supporters of buying local -- and their favorite product is our cheese curds.

"What keeps us going to Hansen's, however, is the quality and the freshness of their products," Johna says. "When we walk into the store to pick up a gallon of milk or a pint of ice cream, we know that we can trust that we are going to walk away with a product that was carefully made and handled to deliver the same high quality product time and time again."

Johna also loves how Hansen's engages in the community.

"They host fun events like the Festival of Cheese, share their shop space with local vendors, and open their farm doors to the public to see where the whole milk-making process takes place. It's so much fun!" Johna says. "We just love the overall operation and leadership of Hansen's Farm & Dairy and their local storefronts -- that's why we shop Hansen's."

Thanks, Johna! Customers of the Month receive a $5 gift certificate to use at our stores and hands-on tour passes to visit the farm. Submit your entries at each  of  our stores in Waterloo and Cedar Falls. You could also be selected from your comments on Facebook.
Cow of the Month
January 2017 Cow of the Month
The January Cow of the Month is Lue .   She seems to have found the Fountain of Youth. She looks like she is about 6 years old -- but she is actually 11, which is quite old for a cow!

Lue has a terrific youthful conformation, and hopefully she will be with us a few more years.
Lue is a problem-free cow that everyone loves. She is easy-going and doesn't draw much attention to herself, just quietly goes about her work.

Along with eight years of producing milk, Lue has also given us eight wonderful calves. Of those calves, two were heifers and six were bulls.

Teacher grants for agricultural curriculum
The Iowa Agricultural Literacy Foundation is offering $200 grants to help Iowa teachers initiate new projects or expand existing projects that promote agriculture literacy in students. Teachers can apply to fund innovative lessons, activities, classroom resources, guest speakers, outreach programs, field trips, and other projects. Up to 170 grants will be awarded.

Cooking with Hansen's
Cheese has never been so light and crispy. Try combining these cheese crisps with your favorite dipping sauce. Try these for your Super Bowl party -- sure to be a big hit!

Colby-Jack Cheese Crisps
Starred ingredients are available at
Hansen's Dairy stores.

INGREDIENTS
  • Non-stick cooking spray
  • 8 ounces finely shredded Spring Green Colby-Jack cheese*
DIRECTIONS
Preheat oven to 350° F. Lightly coat rimmed baking sheet with non-stick cooking spray. Place 2 teaspoons Colby-Jack cheese mounds 2 inches apart on baking sheet. Press mounds gently with fingers to flatten. Bake until mounds are thin, bubbly and golden, no more than 6 to 8 minutes. Immediately transfer crisps to paper towels with a metal spatula. Serve when crisps have cooled completely.

Baking too long will make crisps too hard and not easily removed from the baking sheet.

Tip: May be baked one day ahead and crisped before serving in oven at warm setting for 4 to 5 minutes.
