Jesus words from the Sermon on the Mount:
Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect. (from Matthew 5)
Dear Brothers and Sister in Christ~
BE PERFECT! From the Online-Dictionary:
per·fect
adjective
1. having all the required or desirable elements, qualities, or characteristics; as good as it is possible to be: "she strove to be the perfect person."
Synonyms: ideal, model, without fault, faultless, flawless, ...
2. absolute; complete (used for emphasis): "a perfect stranger."
synonyms: absolute, complete, total, real, out-and-out...
I must admit that I have always found this verse rather intimidating... and impossible! Be perfect? No way! As God is perfect? Impossible!! Impossible- if that is what you really think the definition of PERFECT is! Here, once again, is where my seminary education and GREEK come in handy. The word translated here as "perfect" comes from the Greek word "telos" which most often signifies something not so much morally perfect as we understand the word, as it does something that has grown up, matured and is reaching its perfect end. That is, "telos" is the goal or desired outcome of a thing. Being perfect is a process, a journey! Or, as Kid President said, "GOOD-er."- and in this sense I do believe that GOOD-er is a word! Here is the link to the video from Sunday:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u1zNHoYmhUI
As I shared on Sunday, I prefer Eugene Peterson's translation of this passage- The Message. Here it is again:
In a word, what I am saying is, GROW UP. You are KINGDOM SUBJECTS. Now live like it. Live out your God-created identity. Live generously and graciously toward others, the way God lives towards you.
Be perfect! See you in church!! ~Pastor Linda

Connect360 Adult Education
An Opportunity for Learning and Conversation-
Who is My Neighbor: Talking about Race and Racial Equity
(a study from Lutheran Social Services)
When: Wednesday's January 25, February 1, 8, 15
Time: 6:30pm during connect360 education time
Topics: Setting the Stage- God Made Us Different on Purpose, We are more alike than different: What is Race and Racism- a working definition, Do I have Privilege?, Listening and Telling Stories.
This series will include guest speakers and opportunity for conversation. We will follow the 5 Habits of the Heart to guide our discussions.
1.
An understanding that we are all in this together.
Biologists, ecologists, economists, ethicists and leaders of the great wisdom traditions have all given voice to this theme. Despite our illusions of individualism and national superiority, we humans are a profoundly interconnected species.
2. An appreciation of the value of "otherness." It is true that we are all in this together. It is equally true that we spend most of our lives in "tribes" or lifestyle clans-and that thinking of the world in terms of "us" and "them" is one of the many limitations of the human mind. The good news is that "us and them" does not have to mean "us versus them."
3. An ability to hold tension in life-giving ways. Our lives are filled with inner and outer contradictions. We are flawed and finite beings whose understanding is always partial and in need of correction.
4. A sense of personal voice and agency. Insight and energy give rise to new life as we speak out and act out our own version of truth, while checking and correcting it against the truths of others.
5. A capacity to create community.
