Civil War to Civil Rights: How African American Artists Engage the Past
FREDERICKSBURG, VIRGINIA, February 7, 2017Courtesy of the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, Dr. Evie Terrono, Professor of Art History at Randolph-Macon College, will present "Civil War to Civil Rights: How African American Artists Engage the Past," at Headquarters Library, 1201 Caroline Street, on Thursday, February 9, 7-8 p.m. This event is free and open to the public.

This presentation examines the multifaceted and highly politicized dimensions of race and American identity depicted in the artistic productions of African American artists. Dr. Terrono will introduce us to artists such as Elizabeth Catlett, Faith Ringgold, Kara Walker, Fred Wilson, Kehinde Wiley, and Hank Willis Thomas, among others. She will discuss how the transition from slavery to the Civil War to the Civil Rights period in the 1960s and 1970s can be viewed in their works.

Dr. Terrono received her BA from the University of Crete in Greece and her MA from Queen's College. She earned an MA and PhD from the City College of New York.
