Update from the Executive Director

Mill City Commons welcomes  its new neighbors, Abiitan and Mill City Quarter!

Each is a unique residential facility that greatly adds to the housing options within the neighborhood. Both share a  woonerf that provides public parking and access to the river. The woonerf provides metered public parking weekdays after 6pm and weekends all day. Plans to complete the woonerf are on track for late spring. Once complete, the woonerf will provide public access to the river's walking and biking paths.

Last week, 30 Mill City Commons members participated in a Nosy Neighbor tour of  Abiitan's beautiful facility. They were treated to a delicious lunch at the neighborhood's newest restaurant,  Smith and Porter and received the gracious invitation to "Stop in, any time!"
Please note: Men's Dutch Lunch is moving to the Porter Cafe, starting February 16.

Mill City Quarter shares the other side of the woonerf. It is the first high tech affordable housing community in downtown Minneapolis, and open to all ages. It recently has reached full capacity. Betsy Wray and I were treated to a tour of this remarkable facility last week. It has some terrific common use spaces, many of which could afford some wonderful shared experiences.

The Atul Gawande event (full details below)  is free and open to the public! We received additional information from the Village to Village network, yesterday, that Robin Young of NPR's "Here and Now" will be interviewing Mr. Gawande. This is a remarkable opportunity. I hope you will take advantage of it and invite a friend or two! Space is limited. Registration is required. Click  here to register.

MILL CITY COMMONS: We learn. We share. We engage. We give.

Rendezvous Readers' Book Chat
Wednesday, February 1, 9:30 - 10:30 am
Guthrie Theater Level 5 Express, 818 2nd St S
Join us to discuss A Man Called Ove by Frederick Backman. Ove is a curmudgeon, the kind of man who points at people he dislikes as if they were burglars caught outside his bedroom window. He has staunch principles, strict routines and a short fuse. People call him "the bitter neighbor from hell." Behind the cranky exterior there is a story and sadness. So, when one morning a chatty young couple with two chatty young daughters move in next door and accidentally flatten Ove's mailbox, it's the lead-in to a comical and heartwarming tale of unkempt cats and unexpected friendship--all of which will change one cranky old man and a local residents' association to their very foundations.

If you'd like to read ahead, March's book is Medicine Walk by Richard Wagamese. Have a book suggestion for the Book Chat? Email Barbara Goldner.

MCC members and guests. No registration required.

Tuesday, February 7, 7:00 - 8:30 pm
La Rive Party Room, 110 Bank St SE
Join us as member Bill Davnie, former U.S. State Department foreign service officer, shares his perspectives on foreign policy in the new administration. We still don't know many specifics about how U.S. foreign policy may change, but some challenges already loom before us, and some aspects of President Trump's approach to the world have been consistent for 30 years. Who is staffing the new administration, how the existing national security system is changing and where those changes point should also tell us something. And then we can ponder the lifespan of Twitter-based policy, the role of credibility and the changing perception of America's "soft power." Bring your own thoughts and views to share as well.

News from Members

MCC member Carol Jordan wants members to know about a new volunteer opportunity at the Minneapolis Central Library. The Library's Special Collections Department is looking for volunteers as they start on a year-long project to describe, digitize and preserve thousands of original newspaper photographs from the 1930s and 40s. These photographs, taken by local photographers, chronicle the lives of City and Country residents during the trying and exciting times of the Great Depression and World War II. They need volunteers to help sort and identify these photographs. The task is simple, fascinating and fun (and involves no computers)! If you are interested in helping out, please contact Ted Hathaway at (612) 543-8203 or at [email protected].

MCC member Ellie Hands wants members to know that there is an opening reception at The Museum of Russian Art for Stage Designs of Vera Mednikova on January 26 from 6:30-8:00 pm.
