PRINCIPAL'S CORNER

Lakeview Families,

It was wonderful to see so many of you at our PTSA-sponsored Ice Cream Social last week! As a staff we often talk about how a school is nothing more or less than a web of relationships between students, teacher, families, and community. The Ice Cream Social was wonderful evidence those relationships are stronger than ever.

Also, on Wednesday we had our first whole-school WIN time, which stands for "What I Need." We have built into our Wednesday schedule 30 minutes for each grade level for targeted support and extension activities for students. Each grade level is flooded with additional support staff to make smaller groups possible. This is part of our collaborative work as teacher teams using student data, a process we call "professional learning communities."

Walk-to-School week is next week (Sept 26-30), and for those of you in the walking areas of Lakeview's boundaries I would strongly encourage you to support your student in walking to and from school each day. Traffic in Lakeview's upper and lower lots continues to grow, along with congestion in side streets and thoroughfares. Walking to school is also healthy habit to begin and end your student's school day.

I also encourage every family to join the Lakeview PTSA. We'd love to have members from your extended family join as well - grandparents, aunts, uncles - they can all play an important part in modeling involvement in education. Joining the PTSA gives you a greater voice in letting our lawmakers in Olympia know how important education is to our community. For more information, please visit Lakeview PTSA.

Thank you for sharing your children with us every day.

Thanks - Steve

September 26-30 is Walk to School Week!

This fun event returns the week of September 26-30. Students will get cards punched for each day they walk or bike to school, and there will be lots of chances to win prizes for individuals and classrooms. Punch cards will be distributed to classrooms the week before. Students who arrive by bus or car will have a BINGO board to complete for prizes as well. Parent volunteers will be in the covered basketball court each morning punching cards. Kids can also grab healthy snacks from Met Market, and  Starbucks coffee will be available for parents.

Come help us kick off the week on Monday with a "Parents and Pastries" social gathering at 8:30 to eat some sweets and drink some coffee.

Please contact Erica Gamble ( ericaegamble@gmail.com) if you have questions! Interested volunteers can sign up via SignUpGenius.

Bring your gloves and garden tools, it's time to get our campus looking beautiful! Parents and students are encouraged to come and help clean up the school grounds. We'll be weeding, pruning and planting bulbs/flowers. Please bring your gardening tools (pruners, rakes, shovels, brooms, wheelbarrows and any other useful items). We'll mark all the tools so they can make it back home.  Coffee and doughnuts provided.
If you can not make it but would like to donate needed items or have questions, please contact Brad Schmidt.

Survey for Kirkland Residents

The City of Kirkland is asking for feedback from those who live and work in Houghton about development in the area (click here). The changes that will be made at the Houghton shopping center will affect Lakeview families, so it's worth giving your opinion!  The survey ends Oct 28.

Lakeview PTSA Thanks You

Thank you to all the families and individuals who have joined the Lakeview PTSA this year. We've had an incredible response with nearly an 83% increase in membership over this same time period last year. Membership registration is ongoing throughout the fall -- you can join anytime at lakeviewptsa.org/membership/.

The Lakeview PTSA is an important part of the Lakeview Elementary community and provides essential programs that State funding can no longer provide. PTSA member benefits include:
  • one free printed family directory
  • an online family directory
  • discounts on after school enrichment classes
  • a say in how the PTSA supports the school.

Please show your support for our students by joining the PTSA today!
