From Mrs. Rowley
HAPPY VALENTINE'S DAY (a day later!). St. Ambrose School was proud to be part of the St. Ambrose Samaritan community last weekend, in putting together infant baskets for the Tepayac Center, and making over 1,200 sandwiches for Martha's Table. Amazing things happen, and so many are served, when community comes together!
In case you didn't know: Every week we celebrate reading/literature and differentiated instruction through Reading Groups and Literature Circles on Friday mornings.
Grades 1 and 2 are working hard learning to make text to self, text to text and text to world connections in their reading groups. Grades 3, 4 and 5 are busy dissecting text in their literary circles. A big thank you to our special volunteers, Kathy Freund, Melissa Gilligan, Meredith Hinkle, Lisa McBride, Carrie Walker, and Barry Wright! Reading groups are possible because of their faithful dedication and support of the students and teachers of St. Ambrose!
Please join us on Fridays during the month of March for Stations of the Cross. This will be weekly at 2:30pm. Registration for the 2017-2018 school year is under way! Please call the school office if you are interested in having a tour of our wonderful school.
I will be out of the office next week. I will be joining my family (seven siblings) in Rome in celebration of my brother's 60
th
birthday. Please know that you will all be in my prayers while I am there, and I will bring back some photos to share. Don't forget: Monday is a holiday!

What Are the Symptoms of Influenza?
Influenza (also known as the flu) is a contagious respiratory illness caused by flu viruses. It can cause mild to severe illness. The flu is different from a cold. The flu usually comes on suddenly. People who have the flu often feel some or all of these symptoms:
-
Fever* or feeling feverish/chills
-
Cough
-
Sore throat
-
Runny or stuffy nose
-
Muscle or body aches
-
Headaches
-
Fatigue (tiredness)
-
Some people may have vomiting and diarrhea, though this is more common in children than adults.
* It's important to note that not everyone with flu will have a fever.

Our Wednesday STEM Club was canceled last week, but we did hold STEM on Thursday for Kindergarten and 1
st
grade. In our Thursday STEM, we continued the celebration of the 100
th
day of school (technically the 103
rd
on Thursday) by working on a project involving teamwork and collaboration.
The introduction of teamwork and collaboration skills in Kindergarten and 1
st
grade is hard, but we made it fun by using our math skills to create 103
rd
day masterpieces! We outlined a giant 10 frame on the science tables and worked together to count 100 toothpicks and 100 candy spice gumdrops, and then added 3 more for good measure. After our counting was done, we assembled the gumdrops onto the toothpicks and inserted them into a Styrofoam sphere, creating 103
rd
day masterpieces.
Everyone was very proud of their achievement, and the kindergarten boys marched around the classroom chanting their success! Afterwards, we sampled our creations (quality control testing of course!) and then deconstructed the spheres and produced wonderful 3 dimensional shapes with the gumdrops and toothpicks. Great job everyone!
