Cyclone Hudhud

             Disaster Relief Appeal

Very Severe Cyclonic Storm Hudhud was the strongest tropical cyclone of 2014 within the North Indian Ocean, as well as the most destructive storm in the basin since Cyclone Jal in 2010. Hudhud caused extensive damage to the city of Visakhapatnam and the neighboring districts of Vizianagaram & Srikakulam districts. The cyclone "Hudhud" pounded Vizag (Visakhapatnam) with gale winds of almost 200 kmph on Sunday, the October 12th. People are still facing the after effect of the cyclone. Lack of power, non-availability of drinking water, disrupted communication, broken roads and depleting essential supplies has added to their woes.

VT Seva CEO HH Sri Chinna Jeeyar Swamiji is urging everyone to join hands to alleviate the sufferings of the victims. He immediately pledged an amount of ~$20,000 (10 Lakh Indian Rupees) for Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Relief Fund to aid in disaster relief. VT Seva supported school for visually challenged "Nethra Vidyalaya" premises which is on the shore of Bay of Bengal also became a victim of this cyclone. All the thatched sheds constructed for classrooms, dining and meeting purposes were flown away. 50% of the solar panels which were erected for 100 KB were badly damaged. Uprooted trees, utensils, roofing materials, trash and broken power lines are strewn everywhere.

The recent construction of concrete building for "Nethra Vidyalaya" really saved the lives of blind children, Vedic students (Traditional Education) and inmates of school premises. The building was constructed amidst various challenges. It now proved worth of taking all those risks. If the building were not there, nothing would have remained due to this cyclone. In fact, the children and teachers spent their 3 days of time facing the fury of winds and rain, in the shelter of this concrete building. We thank all the supporters of VT Seva for their generous contributions.

Our volunteers have risen to the occasion and are pooling up resources to conduct rescue operations. We urge you all to contribute generously for reconstruction of Netra Vidyalya premises which houses not only the kitchen, meeting rooms for visually challenged children but also thatched huts (Keteerms) that provide shelter to Vedic Students. Our estimates for the cost of reconstruction of damaged premises is $40,000.
