Dear Friends,

A new year has begun! New plans, new projects...  and for many, new classes, and new challenges. In these hectic and taxing times, we would like to encourage our community: do not neglect your emotional well-being. Take some time to yourself. Nourish your mind. Seek support where you need it. And never feel wrong for being the unique, sensitive person you are.

We have many exciting events we are looking forward to in the coming year. Check out our Mark the Date section of this newsletter for information on upcoming SENGinars, new support groups, and our 2017 Conference, which will be held in Chicago, Illinois this coming August! We hope you will join us.

In gratitude,

Elizabeth A. Ringlee
Executive Director of SENG

Friendships, A Rare Treasure
by Lori Comallie-Caplan

Gifted children often think they do not have friends or that they want more friends.  More recent research and literature shows that gifted children's smaller number's of friends relates more to personality style than to a lack of social skills.  Friendship is not simply acceptance by peers or social competencies. Rather, it is a dynamic relationship that offers more than the acceptance of others based on certain attributes More...
Introversion: The Often Forgotten Factor Impacting the Gifted
by Jill D. Burruss and Lisa Kaenzig

You know at least one or perhaps are one: the child who immediately, when he comes home from school, escapes to the privacy of his room for time alone; the speaker who presents beautifully in front of 1200 people but who leaves a few minutes into the social hour because he says he can't deal with large groups of people; the quiet student who always has a book in hand, commonly plays alone, and whose favorite place is the reading corner; the adult who is vocal and social in a small group of people but who becomes silent and withdrawn if she is made to work in a larger one.  More...
Introversion
by Sharon Lind

It is OK to be different, to feel differently. One group of people, gifted introverts, is not only misunderstood and overlooked, but the people in it are also often saddened because there is confusion or a lack of understanding about their characteristics and needs. Introverts draw their energy from being solitary, and are private people who enjoy doing things by themselves and who reveal their innermost thoughts to only a few.    More...
Tips for Parents: Introverts
by Sharon Lind

Tips for living with introverts:

Honor and acknowledge introverts' need for privacy. Be sure they have a place they can go that is all their own and where they will not be intruded upon. This need for privacy is exercerbated by long term exposure to others (i.e. school or work). More...

Voices - "I Notice"
by Judy A. McNutt

I notice;
Anger doesn't feel good
I notice;
Suffering is a disconnection
I notice;
The real me doesn't ask for perfection
I notice;
Thoughts come on their own
I notice;
I am not alone
I notice;
There is another thinker of the thought
I notice;
It is brain but I am not
I notice.
You and I are one
I notice
I forget to have fun
I notice
Contrast gets my attention.
I notice
I am my own invention.

SENGVine's "Voices" column seeks to share creative works reflecting the gifted experience. Art, poetry, essays, articles, and stories are accepted from gifted individuals of all ages. Submit yours to: [email protected].

Post of the Month

Every day, SENG shares articles and information with the gifted community via Facebook, Twitter, and Tumblr.

The article  Gifted Kids At Risk: Who's Listening?  by Patricia A. Schuler was widely read and appreciated in our online community this month.

Visit us on Tumblr!  Tumblr is a valuable and vibrant online community, where many teens and young adults find solace if they feel "different" from the rest of the world... whether it is because of their interests, their identities, their disabilities, or their gifts.

In Memoriam: Alexinia Baldwin, Ph.D.

We were deeply saddened to hear of Dr. Alexinia Baldwin's passing. She served as a member of the SENG Professional Advisory Board and was an internationally recognized expert in curriculum development and instructional theory for gifted and early childhood education. Our condolences to her loved ones; this community will miss her dearly.
Congratulations to our newly certified SMPG Facilitators!

We had a wonderful group join us at the Chicago Marriott Naperville for SENG Model Parent Group Facilitator Training on January 14 & 15.  And many thanks to our facilitator trainers, Heather Cachat and Carol Malueg, for sharing their knowledge and time with us.   We are so thankful for those who are dedicated to the gifted community.
