St. Luke's Vestry

In January, we honor and thank our vestry who have served St. Luke's Church this year. The vestry in an Episcopal Church is the "governing board" that works together with the rector to lead our congregation. Each vestry member is charged with the task of leading of an area of our ministry: Communication, Stewardship, Membership (both major events and cultivation of members), Learning, and Service. The rector appoints a senior warden, and the vestry elects among themselves a junior warden and a clerk. Our ongoing vestry members are Tom Cashman, Nicole Torres, Jennifer Harold, Victor Bright, and Jim Teays. We give special thanks for those vestry members who are completing their three-year term of service this January: Mark Fredericksen and Roger Flores.

Annual Parish Meeting
January 29, 2017 at noon

St. Luke's Church gathers for its annual ministry meeting. This is a time to hear of the great work accomplished in 2016 and to look forward to our common ministry in the coming year. There is much to share, so please be there.

At the Annual Meeting we elect new vestry members. We have openings for three new members for full, 3-year terms, and one new member for a 1-year term. Vestry members are expected to attend the vestry retreat (usually in February) and vestry meetings (second Sundays of the month at 9 a.m.), and participate as a leader in an area of ministry where your gifts are needed. Those who have been nominated to serve for the 3, 3-year terms are:

Tracy Russell      Linda Calbom      Nancy Hanson

In a slightly out-of-the-ordinary move, I have asked Mark Fredericksen if he would consider staying on as Sr. Warden for another year, occupying the open 1-year term. It has been my practice, whenever possible, to have Sr. Wardens for two consecutive years. Holding over a Warden is often done in times of transition in parish leadership. I would argue that we are in the midst of growth and change and St. Luke's would benefit from another year of Mark's steady and wise leadership. Consequently, I would nominate Mark Fredericksen for the open 1 yr. term on the vestry and to continue to serve as Sr. Warden.

We also elect alternate delegates to Diocesan Convention at the Annual Meeting. Delegates represent St. Luke Church at Regional Meetings  a couple times per year and at Convention-a Friday afternoon and Saturday in November. St. Luke's practice is to elect alternate delegates each year who then become delegates the following year. Last year we elected Daniel Crayne and Charles Smith to serve as our alternate delegates. The following two persons have been nominated to serve as Alternate Delegates for 2017 and Delegates for 2018:

 Karen Uitting      Victor Bright

As Charles Smith currently serves as a leader in our regional ministry, he may serve as a delegate at large, triggering the expected service of one of our alternate delegates.

Abundance

How can we engage to express our
participation in God's abundance?
Hospitality Guild - Hosting Coffee Hour

The year is ending and we will need members to sign up for the upcoming 2017 Sunday Coffee Hour. Please consider signing up for hosting 1-2 Coffee Hours during the next year. While Coffee Hour is usually associated with snacks and other goodies, this is also an opportunity to host and be hospitable towards others in the parish. Use coffee hour to celebrate birthdays, anniversaries, promotions, graduations, and other milestones during the year. While we encourage simple snacks that don't require much preparation or intense clean up, it is also a great way to share your favorite dishes with others. Coffee hour is also a good time to learn about significant events in the life of parishioners. We invite you to also team up with other church members to host this important weekly ministry.  You may sign up for dates online or on the list that is posted in the Guild Hall. If you have any questions about Coffee Hour, please contact Nicole Torres at torres.ni@gmail.com.

A Call for Prizes at Shrove Tuesday's Pancake Supper and Bingo

Did you receive a special gift this holiday season that... well... you think someone would else would enjoy more than you? At St. Luke's Shrove Tuesday Pancake Supper and Bingo, we bank on re-gifts passed on by parishioners for BINGO prizes. The gifts may be new or barely used items (don't upend your junk drawer) and may be useful or quite ridiculous. Please drop off your items at church to to the parish office as soon as possible so we will know what prizes we may offer at this fun-packed parish event on Tuesday, February 28. As for the particulars of the Shrove Tuesday event itself, stay tuned...

Mock Interviews for Lindbergh High School

This comes to us from RHS career counselor, our CISR contact:

I am reaching out to you and your network regarding the first annual "Mock Interview" exercise at Lindbergh High School on   March 7th. The goal is to offer 500 LHS students the opportunity to experience an interview process.

To accomplish this objective, we need to 100 volunteers to conduct the interviews.  The interview questions will be provided but we are asking for the interviewer to provide feedback to the students. Each interview will last 15 minutes. In preparation for the interview and under the guidance of their CTE teacher, students will complete a resume, review interview questions, pay attention to non-verbal communication, and learn how to dress appropriately.

In appreciation, coffee and pastries will be provided in the morning and a light lunch will be served by LHS' culinary students. An order form will be emailed to each volunteer. Of course, you'll also feel a warm fuzzy feeling for having supported LHS students as they prepare for their futures.

If you're able to volunteer your time RSVP with Ms. Susan Huynh, LHS College & Career Specialist via phone or email:  425.204.3225 or S usan.Huynh@rentonschools.us

From the Vestry
* The executive team and parish staff have been working together on a grant proposal from Calvin College to s upport liturgical life at St. Luke's.

* Sink holes and erosion in the parking lot and under Pritchard Hall have demanded immediate attention. The s ink hole in the parking lot was filled with an expanding, hardening foam.  Research is in progress to d etermine how to manage the erosion under the northwest corner of Pritchard Hall.

* We give many thanks to Mark and Roger for their efforts while serving full 3-year terms on Vestry.
