A Note from Anne

A few years ago the NFL was dubbed by sports writers the "No Fun League" because of their crack down on on-field celebrations such as spiking the ball in the end zone. I was in a meeting with Peter Mayer this morning, and I was putting a damper on enthusiasm during Lent. I'm a bit dour, Morbid Mom around our house. And Peter asked, "Why? Why can't we look to events - Annual Meetings, trips to the dentist, Lent - with a sense of optimism?"

So I'm proposing the CFL - the Church Fun League. Here are some suggestions for participation.

First, the Annual Meeting:
  • Bring a delicious dish to the pot luck. Not Beef Wellington, but perhaps enchiladas? The signature Tolley Kale Salad?
  • Show off your salsa moves a la Victor Cruz when you move through the buffet line. It's six beats to the measure and move your hips, people!
  • After the Treasurer gives his report, fist bump him as he returns to his seat. He's done a magnificent job this year. Coach is keeping him on.
  • Call for an AMEN when the Missions Commission reports on their re-focused efforts and outreach in 2016 into 2017. They're good - they're very very good.
  • And try some dabbing when the Stewardship team speaks up. Let's show some team love and pride. Maybe we need spirit wear?
Next, the dentist: There are unending advantages when you have a healthy mouth so...
  • Brush your teeth twice daily for 2 minutes - about the length of time it will take you to remember where you put your keys. Or hum the doxology three times. Or "Crazy in Love" once...and I'm looking at you Les and Peggy...
  • Floss regularly, I start 2 weeks before my check up. I call it defensive flossing.
  • Before you go to your (regular) check-up think happy thoughts - like how fun the CFL can be, or butterflies being tagged in our Day School garden.
And Lent? If that isn't a lesson in optimism, hope, and faith, then I don't know what is.

Welcome to the CFL.
Annual Meeting
THIS Sunday

This year's annual meeting will be held THIS Sunday, Jan. 29 in the parish hall. We will have a potluck lunch starting at 12:15 p.m.  We ask parishioners bring the following:

Last Names A-F - Entrees
Last Names G-P - Side Dishes
Last Names Q-Z - Desserts

The meeting will include a review of 2016 and a presentation on the 2017 budget. We will also elect four vestry candidates to replace those rotating off. Please note that because of our by-laws voting can only occur during the meeting.

Pledge Statements

Pledge statements for 2016 will be available for pick up this Sunday in the parish hall. Any statements not collected by Jan. 30th will be mailed out.
Winter Relief Volunteers Needed

Winter relief  (offering warm meals and a safe place to sleep in the cold winter) is coming to St. Margaret's the week of Feb. 13. We are in need of many volunteers to run this program smoothly, particularly:

From cooking to chaperoning to transporting, we have many roles to fill, especially
*Hosts -- greeting and visiting with guests;
*Laundry helpers to collect guest laundry in the morning and return in the afternoon;
*Drivers with their own vehicles to transport guests to and from Trinity Methodist in Annapolis; and
*Shower monitors in the evenings from 7 to 10 p.m.

Can't make it to the church that week?  Then volunteer to purchase items for lunch bags and hygiene products. A list of items is available for choosing at our winter relief table on Sunday mornings.

Drop by the winter relief table on Sunday morning, sign up on our automated site through a link on our website's homepage, or contact volunteer coordinator Judy Hall at [email protected].
Heretics Reboot
Starts Feb. 19

The Rev. Peter Mayer and parishioner Spencer Johnson invite you to participate in a new Sunday morning book study. Titled Seekers (formerly Heretics), the group will read and discuss thought provoking, contemporary religious books during the formation hour (10:25-11 a.m.). The first book is "What Did Jesus Ask?" a collection of reflections by a variety of writers that can be purchased at Amazon.com. All participants must acquire their own books. The group will have its first class on Feb. 19 in the administrative conference room. Please join them!
Lunches of Love

Once again the children and youth Sunday School classes will make lunches for our Winter Relief guests.  Because this was a popular activity last year, we have decided to make 100 lunches.  In order to make this a successful event, we will need the help of ALL Sunday School classes and welcome participation from all parishioners as well.  Each class will have a donation box outside their classroom.

Please plan on donating the following items:
Godly Play Preschool-boxes of granola bars
Godly Play Kindergarten-loaves of whole or honey wheat bread
Sparks 2nd and 3rd Grade-lunch size packages of fruit cups
4th and 5th Grade-lunch size packages of chips
Youth (Middle School and High School)-packages of lunch meat

Items can be dropped off in front of each classroom on Jan. 29th and February 5th.  Lunches will be made immediately following Sunday School in the Fellowship Hall on Sunday, February 12th. Jenelle is in need of adult volunteers to set up, monitor and clean up the lunch making. More information will be given out to each Sunday School Class.

For questions or to volunteer to help, please email jenelle@st-margarets. org.
Guild Meeting on Feb. 1

At the monthly Guild Meeting on February 1st at 1 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall,  members will make something from "nothing."  Using stones and shells with pearls and a variety of nuts, screws, and washers, parishioner Leigh Gruber will lead the group in making decorative pins, refrigerator magnets, or necklace pendants.  Feel free to bring any components or glue guns, you have around the house! There will be a lunch served at noon. All are welcome.

Youth  News

We are thrilled to share that a young lady who is part of the youth group at Asbury Broadneck UMC has written a play about the Civil Rights movement. It will premiere February 26 during that church's youth-led fourth Sunday of the month service at ABUMC. What makes this especially exciting is that they invited our youth to participate! We met Sunday afternoon to get acquainted with each other and to get our parts. While this sort of commemoration is a tradition at Asbury  Broadneck, this is the first time they have invited another church's youth group to join with them.

We are working on the schedule of rehearsals; the first one planned is for February 5th. We also will play host to our fellow actors from Asbury Broadneck on Monday evenings for dinner and Youth Group.

We are very excited to be working together with our neighbors on this important production. There will be more details to come, so stay tuned!

Other youth events:

Feb. 5 - Scout Sunday - wear your uniform and assist during the 9 & 11:15 a.m. services
Feb. 10 & 11 - Night Watch in New York City
Feb. 12 - Lunches for Winter Relief (see above)
Feb. 19 - Serving dinner at the Light House

For more information, email Jeff Conover, Youth Ministry Leader, at
Bible Women Study

We continue our book study on the book "Bible Women:  All Their Words and Why They Matter" by Episcopal priest Lindsay Freeman. So far, we have learned of daring, devoted, determined, and, yes, even domineering females who lived exciting and meaningful lives. Please join us!  It is never too late!  We meet on:

*Thursday mornings at 9:15 a.m. in the formation building (childcare provided in the nursery); and the third Sunday of every month during the formation hour.

We also have a weekly video on the characters of study with a parishioner and the Rev. Jane Hague. Here is this week's video:
