Carroll EMC awards
grants to teachers

Several Carrollton City Schools teachers were awarded Bright Ideas grants from the Carroll EMC Foundation this week, exciting teachers and their students, too.

This year's presentations included awards to more than 70 teachers at 39 schools in Carroll, Haralson, Heard, Paulding and Polk counties. The total amount awarded this year was $68,500.

Six teachers at CES were awarded funding to implement their grant ideas ranging from STEM to dramatic play. At CHS,  three teachers were awarded funds and one each at CMS and CJHS.

The CES grant winners are Devonne Cooper, Cheryl Miller, Annette Perkins, Joseph Benefield, Liz Duncan and Amy Ware. Mary Miller at  CMS and Stephanie Bone at CJHS were awarded grants and Noah Brewer, Valerie Moss and Robby Blakemore were the CHS grant recipients.

Bright Ideas grants are funded through the donations of Carroll EMC members who participate in the Cooperative's Operation Round Up program. Since 2007, local teachers have received grants totaling nearly $460,000.

Four CHS students
make All-State Band

Following the second round of auditions held this past weekend, four student musicians will represent Carrollton High School in the prestigious All-State Band to be held March 2-4 at the Classic Center in Athens.

A record 12 CHS band members were included in the 2,000 musicians statewide invited to the second round of auditions. The four who made the All-State roster are Taylor Berry, principal trombone; Lainey Driver, trumpet; Ryan Schumann, trumpet; and Christian Williamson, trombone. The auditions were held Jan. 14 at Houston County High School.

"I an excited for our band program to continue excelling and humbled by the hard work that our students dedicate to their art daily," said Chris Carr, CHS band director. "I hope that all who committed to the process even before the first round auditions knows that I am thankful for their personal efforts and leadership in making our program fantastic."

The other students who qualified for the second round, a feat in itself, are Brianna Colquitt, Cindy Denaris, Maggi Hines, Kayland Johnson, Jordan Mullenix, Kelley Ozier, Kendall Ozier and Thomas Svegl.

The All-State Band program is sponsored by the Georgia Music Educators Association.
PLC CORNER
PLC offers credit acceleration opportunities
Congratulations to the Performance Learning Center's students Alex Brewer and Karen Gearhart for being selected as students of the month for November/December.

Alex and Karen entered the PLC to take advantage of the opportunity to accelerate their acquisition of credits by earning more than the typical four credits per semester. In pursuit of their goals, they remained focused and made strategic use of their time. They committed to working hard at school as well as carving out countless hours beyond their school day to make their dreams a reality.

In addition to accelerating course completion, Alex has aspirations to enlist in the U.S. Army and has been preparing to take the Armed Forces test (ASVAB) in January. As for Karen, at the end of the fall 2016-17 semester, she had earned 27 of the 28 credits required by Carrollton City Schools to graduate. This semester she is attending the University of West Georgia though the Move On When Ready program (MOWR), earning both her final high school credit and college credit simultaneously.
