Notes from the Executive Director

Dear Hearts Friends & Family,

The beginning of the year for Hearts is typically quiet. I've found we welcome the new year with a sigh of relief, a few months of respite before we begin the exciting roll into our annual events--the instructor certification workshop (OSWC), the Annual Student Horse Show, summer camp, the Pegasus Luncheon, and the Halloween Spooktacular.

2017 is showing us a different kind of year--we've launched with a bang! Record breaking numbers of students, rainy days inspiring fun lessons in the round-pen, two afternoons a week with Girls, Inc. equine facilitated learning (EFL) participants, and that just touches the surface! I'm often hidden away in my office or out on meetings, so it always gives me great joy to have those quiet moments where I can watch a lesson or listen to our volunteers banter in the cross-ties.

I'm especially proud of our staff who have made an effort to get outside and really connect with the lessons and Hearts community:

Devon Sachey, our Program Director, not only teaches one afternoon a week, but in the coming months is planning to rotate her schedule to provide peer interaction and feedback to all our Instructors so we can continue offering the highest caliber of therapeutic riding lessons.

Dawn Nelson, our Volunteer Director, is also rotating outside with the volunteers--hearing about concerns and answering questions so she can better train and anticipate the needs of our incredible support group!

Shallon Dusebout, our Program Coordinator, is often who you'll speak with first if you call Hearts, but she also manages to find time to teach therapeutic riding lessons, provide her Equine Specialist skills with our EFL groups, and connect with our volunteers.

And Duane Harsh, our Barn Manager, is rarely inside, ensuring all our horses are cared for and the facility looks its best.

I think these things--though seemingly small--are what differentiates us. We are not a large organization; in fact, in Santa Barbara we're considered fairly small. But the dedication and passion of our staff, the loyalty of our volunteers, and the care we put in to creating the best environment for everyone at Hearts, truly shows.

So despite the lack of respite, we're excited for 2017! And I ask  you this month, a month that embodies love and care for others, please take a moment to look around at Hearts and see the care that has gone into making our facility the best place to spend some time--whether you're a volunteer giving your time to a great cause, a participant in one of our programs, or a supporter who wants to experience an hour of happiness.

Because if you're inspired, then we're doing a good job.

Happy February, Happy Valentine's Day and Happy 2017!

Program Update

Have you ever been told the most beautiful things in life aren't things? They're people, places, memories and pictures. They're feelings, moments, smiles, and laughter.  This outlook encourages us to reflect on whom and what encapsulate the beautiful "things" in our lives.

Like many of you, I find Hearts to be a constant source of beautiful things.  Among my favorite things are the stories I hear--whether it is hearing riders express how their one hour at Hearts fills an entire week with joy, or having a parent express gratitude for the immeasurable progress their child has made during their time with our horses.

While there are countless beautiful things happening at Hearts this month, a few in particular include: Bob Ramsey and Atlas, our newest herd additions; the increase in our students in 2017 (we've grown to 83 riders in lessons per week, and that doesn't include our EFL classes!); one of our young riders, Ben, is reported to be walking independently, after five months of therapeutic riding; several new students are beginning to ride independently of their leader; Tack Shack is teaming together in preparation for the Tack N' Tog; a Local Girl Scout Troop is volunteering their time to beautify the Hearts Sensory Trail; and our horses are enjoying the lush green grass, courtesy of Monday Pony Pals and RAIN.

I'd say that's a lot to be thankful for, and it's just the tip of the iceberg this month!  So stop in for a visit if you are in the neighborhood.  I promise you will be glad you did.

Volunteer Update

We have weather this year! Punxsutawney Phil saw his shadow on Groundhog Day, and winter will continue. I write to you looking out on a snow-covered mountain range, in awe of nature's majesty. An abundance of skiers and snowboarders cover the hills in front of me.  Lines intersect, people gather, there is movement and learning. I am reminded of Hearts. Sun, rain, mud, horses, riders, volunteers, we gather together for an experience in nature. Movement and Learning continue all winter long with indoor and outdoor lessons.

Friday volunteers serve on a rainy afternoon, wearing the new volunteer shirt design! You can always v isit the Learning Center to shop for Fanwear, including polar fleece, hoodies, and jackets for kids and adults.
