Dear Neighbour:
Ward 9 Map

I hope that 2017 has started out well for you and the coming year will bring you much good health and happiness. I took some time off with my husband and I am looking forward to a very interesting year ahead.

Many of us celebrated the New Year on January 1 but our Chinese community is celebrating its new year on January 28 and I am enjoying celebrating with our local groups and organizations including ringing in the new year at midnight on the 27th at the Fo Guang Shan Buddhist temple on Millcreek.

Although our weather has been warmer these past weeks remember it is still winter and we are likely to experience more cold and snowy days ahead.  See the links to snow clearing information in the newsletter

In the event that you are unable to view this
e-newsletter please note that there is always a link on the front page of my website  www.ward9.ca.

As always, my staff and I are here to help you with any City or Regional issues.  Just send me an email to  [email protected] or call  905-896-5900 and check the Ward 9 website at  www.ward9.ca for ongoing updates.

OMB Makes Final Decision on 2700 Aquitaine

On January 20, the Ontario Municipal Board (OMB) made its final decision on the application at 2700 Aquitaine.

The board has approved development of  3 apartment buildings of 12, 9 and 7 storeys comprised of 393 new units.  With removal of 112 of the garden home units, the final number will be 616 units.   In all of the proposals and the final approved plan, the towers are joined by 4 or 5 storey podium buildings.

I am not happy with the decision nor with the development as it will set a precedent for further applications to ignore our Intensification Policies and our Official Plan.  The OMB decision shows again that the province of Ontario has taken the planning of our cities out of the hands of the elected officials and put it into the hands of an appointed body that has no connection to the community.

I already have meetings scheduled with other landowners who are bringing us proposals that far exceed what is in the City policies.  I will be opposing them also and will hold public information sessions in the coming months.
Road Safety and Vision Zero Initiative

The Road Safety Committee of which I was chair was disbanded last term of Council at the recommendation of Traffic and Clerks staff who felt that city staff could implement all safety programs.  All of the major campaigns were designed by the committee and the input and ideas came from the citizens, Councillors, Agencies and staff representatives.   We developed some good campaigns and also developed and produced the Road Safety Handbook.

I have asked for a report to come to the March 1st General Committee meeting. At that time I will be moving that the committee be reinstated and that we open it for citizen applications again.  To date two other Councillors are interested in serving with me on the committee and  I am hopeful that my colleagues on Council will vote in favour of reinstating this important committee.

The staff report will also speak to Vision Zero which is an International road safety campaign mainly for pedestrian and cyclist safety.  Given the high numbers of pedestrians injured or killed in the past year, we have to do more than deal with this using technical criteria.
Coldest Night of the Year Walk for The Dam

Once again I have entered a team for the Coldest Night of the Year.

On the evening of February 25, I will be joining hundreds of residents to walk on the Coldest Night of the Year to raise funds for the Dam Youth Drop In and prevent homelessness in our community. This is a family-friendly, fun winter fundraising event for Mississauga's homeless, hungry and hurting.

The walk begins and ends at the Meadowvale Community Centre & Library, 6655 Glen Erin Dr., where walkers will register, turn in the results of their fundraising efforts, and return at the end of the evening for a warm celebration meal.

My team name is "Pat's Plodders".   I am looking for people to join my team and raise funds and walk with me.  If you would like to be  a part of a fun evening and help our youth, Click here to donate or to join my team.

New TransHelp Website and Online Application

On January 3, the Region launched the new TransHelp website and online application.

The new website supports residents in learning about, applying for and riding TransHelp, the Region's accessible transportation service.

The site is designed to better serve potential applicants to TransHelp, through supportive, transcribed videos, an online form or PDF application, and up-to-date user information for passengers - all mobile-friendly and accessible.

Two videos are available on the site to support TransHelp applicants.
Improvements to Meadowvale Community Centre & Library

The Meadowvale Community Centre and Library has now been open for four months.

I am proud of the LEED silver building which has floor-to-ceiling windows, modern light fixtures, high ceilings, and bright white walls creating an open and inviting publicly-accessible gathering space.  It has become a popular destination for adults and children in the Meadowvale Community.

As with any new building there were a few changes that needed to be made and I am pleased to report that the  installation of the automatic accessible doors to the library terrace is complete.

As well at my request, 12 additional parking spaces were added in the first week of December.

Click here to view a CBC segment on the Meadowvale Community Centre and Library which aired on January 7.  You will have bear through watching a few commercials. The segment starts at about the 1.17 mark in the clip.

Region of Peel hits One Million Tonnes of Marketed Recyclable Materials

In December, the Region of Peel celebrated the 10 th  anniversary of the Material Recovery Facility's opening and the collection of 1 million tonnes of recyclable materials recovered and marketed for reuse.

1 million tonnes of recyclable materials is roughly equivalent to the weight of 182,000 elephants.

This has been achieved through a collaborative effort involving recycling partners, government, industry and residents.

There is more we can do and we need to work together to make sure we continue to recycle as much material as possible.
I want to thank Ward 9 residents for doing their part.
Dog Waste Stations Pilot Project Ends

This pilot project in Lake Aquitaine Park for the disposal of dog waste started on March 30, 2016. Five stations were installed around the park, each of which had a supply of biodegradable bags for the public to use and a bin specifically designed for the waste.

An additional station was also installed at the Q Park Leash free zone.

The pilot has now ended and staff report that there was very little use of the special bins for the waste although the bags were being used.

As this is an expensive program requiring special removal contractors, I have asked staff to review removing these bins and continuing to provide bags only.

Signs will be posted on the containers explaining that the pilot has ended and that the containers will be removed on Monday January 23, 2017.  Waste receptacles will be located at these locations until our summer waste receptacle placement is reinstated.

Once we have fully reviewed the results I will let residents know how we will be moving forward.

Miway Logo Most MiWay Fares Frozen
