Association Update

Dear AFRA members,
This month's newsletter introduction is a little different, as we are not going to talk about Association activities.
With the death of Boeing's Joe Sutter (the father of the B747) last August, and the seeming endless stream of Boeing 747 retirements (953 to date), I wanted to talk about the plane that revolutionised air travel. Its distinctive shape has made it among the most recognisable aircraft ever. It has carried millions of passengers and cargo around the globe; its size and financial benefits helped to make international air travel possible for the masses.
Of the 1481 'classics' built (100-400 series) there are 390 747-400's and 14 of the older generation of 747's still operating, which includes those in the USAF and Air Force One.
As of January 2017, the 747 has been involved in 61 hull-loss accidents resulting in 3,718 fatalities, that is a less than 4% hull loss rate in 45 years of operations, and only nine of those hull losses can be directly attributed to the aircraft and its maintenance.
The B747-800 is still in production with nearly 100 now in service and order numbers received a boost in 2016 after UPS announced it has ordered 14 cargo freighters and took an option for a further 14 - the largest order since December 2006.
British Airways have always been the largest operator of the B747, with the first being delivered in 1970, and last currently forecast for retirement in 2022 - that will be over 50 years of B747 operation.
While the appetite for these very large passenger aircraft including the A380 appears to be on the wane, with Singapore Airlines not renewing its lease on its first A380, and no new order for the aircraft in the last year, the Boeing 747 freighter may yet outlive the A380.
The market forecast for passenger growth in China and India looks set to treble in the next 10 years as the middle-class population in Asia increases. The future demand for these aircraft is there - if the manufacturers can keep the production lines open.
Cargo growth is on the increase, and there is nothing on the horizon to replace the B747; will we see B747's still flying 80 years after the first one was built? True testament to an amazing design indeed.

Government Affairs Program
As the New Year is now underway, the Government Affairs Committee has refocused outreach and engagement efforts in the European Union. On Friday, January 27, in Brussels, the Conseil Européen de Remanufacture (European Remanufacturing Council) officially announced its strategic plan in representing the future of the remanufacturing industry. As an associate member of the Conseil, AFRA staff was honored to attend the event and have the opportunity to speak with representatives from the remanufacturing industry about potential synergies moving forward.

AFRA BMP Development Committee
The BMP Development Committee met via teleconference in early January and discussed potential changes to strengthen the BMP. As the AFRA Board of Directors recently approved modifications to the AFRA BMP, the Committee as well as AFRA staff continues to fine-tune and update the BMP.
