Academics:
Boeing Internship Informational Night  
An amazing internship opportunity with Boeing (at the El Segundo location) for current juniors interested in pursuing a career in Engineering. This unpaid summer internship provides PVPUSD students the opportunity to gain hands-on experience and exposure to science, technology, engineering, and math. The program lasts for 8 weeks (June-August), and students will earn 10 elective credits and letter grade upon completion. This opportunity is only available to a select few students. 
All those interested need to attend the informational evening to hear about the program from the Boeing Internship Supervisor and to get an application. Selected applicants will be chosen for an interview.

Annual Galapagos Research Trip 
Are you interested in studying Blue-Footed Boobies? Have you ever dreamed of observing the Galapagos Giant Tortoise in its natural habitat? Did you know that there are Marine Iguanas found in Galapagos that are found nowhere else in the world? 

The 13th Annual Galapagos Research Expedition is a summer program that includes a 10-day research excursion to Ecuador and the Galapagos Islands that focuses on the ecological niche of organisms through observational studies. This is an intensive course in the use of field-based and general research methods related to Galapagos wildlife. The course will run from July 26-August 8, 2017 and then continue on into the 2017-2018 academic school year as students will enroll in Science Research 2. 

Students earn an entire year (10 credits) of high school Science Research 1 credits in the summer and can earn an optional 3 units of college credits from Lees McRae College in North Carolina. 

  • Student Recruitment Meetings will be held Wednesday, February 8th and Thursday, February 9th at lunch in Mrs. Muñoz's Room (Room 210). 
  • Parent Informational Meeting will be Thursday, February 9th at 6:30pm in Room 210.

American Math Competition 10 & 12

The American Math Competition, AMC 10 & 12, will be given at PV High on Wed, Feb 15th, 8:00am - 9:30am. This national contest, sponsored by the Mathematical Association of America (MAA), is used to identify, recognize, and reward excellence in math. It is open to all students at PV High and all Honors Math students should take it.  It is a great way to practice advanced problem solving and to exercise your brain.  A $5 fee covers the cost of purchasing the exams.  Please sign up with your math teacher, and contact Mrs. Norris ([email protected]) with any questions.

Harbor College Offers Business 1 Class at PVHS for Spring Semester!

Counseling and College & Career Center:

Attention Parent of Juniors: 

The Counselors will be holding a Junior Parent Presentation on February 8th at 8:30AM and 6:30PM in the MPR.



Both presentations will cover the same information so parents should join us for the presentation that best fits their schedule. The purpose of this evening is to review graduation requirements, College admissions information, testing information, and the letter of recommendation procedures. Counselors will discuss the importance of finding an appropriate College match for the student and topics to consider when developing a College list. Services from the College and Career Center and the Naviance program will also be reviewed. Counselors will discuss in depth the College application process, including types of admission options, eligibility index vs. committee selection, and parts of the application folder. Finally, counselors will also briefly cover other program information such as NCAA requirements, essays and personal statements, and College visits. We hope to see you there!

SENIORS,  Cal Grant Awards are already being generated by the California Student Aid Commission (CSAC).   In order to qualify you must meet GPA and financial need criteria.  The Cal Grant GPA data was successfully uploaded by PVHS in November (unless you opted out).  In order to be considered for the Cal Grant Awards, seniors must also submit the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid).  If you have NOT filed the FAFSA, please do so before the deadline posted by the college/university to which you applied.  To access the FAFSA website, click on the following link:    https://fafsa.ed.gov/.  To manage your Cal Grants online, the CSAC has created WebGrants 4 Students (WGS).  To create an account, please log onto 
https://mygrantinfo.csac.ca.gov/logon.asp.  Creating an account will allow you to view updates and make corrections if necessary.
 
Scholarship Deadlines through February 10 :   We are in the midst of scholarship season!  NOW IS THE TIME TO APPLY.  To access more information on these scholarships and others, please log onto NAVIANCE. Click on the COLLEGES tab and then scroll down to SCHOLARSHIPS and MONEY. Click on SCHOLARSHIP LIST. At this point, select the scholarship of interest. In many cases, you will be directed to a website for the application. In other instances, you may be able to download the application directly from NAVIANCE.
 
 
·  January 31   - PVP ROTARY CLUB SPEECH CONTEST  ($200 - $1,000) - grades 9-12; students will present their speech on February 10 at the Rotary Club Meeting.  Speech Topic: "Serving Humanity", the Rotary Motto this year.  Completed application is due prior to speech.  Applications may be downloaded from Naviance.
 
·  February 1   AL NEUHARTH FREE SPIRIT SCHOLARSHIP   -JUNIORS ONLY are encouraged to apply for the 2017, all expense-paid, conference at the Newseum in Washington, D.C.  To qualify you must be a high school junior who will graduate in the Class of 2018; be committed to pursuing a career in journalism; demonstrate qualities of a "free spirit".  To apply, log onto http://www.newseuminstitute.org/initiatives/al-neuharth-free-spirit-and-journalism-conference/

PV Pinnacle Business Club
First special guest speaker was a big success. We had 35 people, including some parents, listen to Mr. Al-Juboori's story.
The next special guest speaker will be on February 16th after school. This speaker will discuss accounting, finance and project management.

The PVHS Student Body filmed our annual Lip Dub this past Thursday!  This high energy, spirit filled day brings our school community together as one to celebrate all we are as Sea Kings!  Thank you Mrs. Maxfield and ASB students for this amazing day!

Athletics:
Surf Team:
On Thursday, the Surf Team finally had good enough conditions to hold the long awaited PV vs Peninsula surf contest. The Sea Kings got out to an early lead, sweeping several divisions and held on to defeat Peninsula 108-60. Great job Kings of the Sea!

Girls Soccer:
The girls had plenty of minutes of action this week on the soccer pitch. On Tuesday, the team went into sudden death overtime before defeating Peninsula 2-1.
O n Thursday, the team faced Redondo Union and again went to OT. This time the game ended 0-0. On Friday, PV defeated Inglewood at home 13-0. 

The team is now 5-0-1 in league and firmly in control of the Bay League race with 4 games left to play!

Boys Soccer:
The boys had a busy week with an extra game to make up after the bad weather last week. 

On Tuesday, PV traveled up the hill and beat Peninsula 1-0 after a goal in the 1st minute of the game. On Thursday, PV got out to a 3-0 lead over Redondo, before the Sea Hawks mounted an improbable comeback to defeat PV 4-3. On Friday, the boys bounced back with a 6-0 win over Inglewood. 

The team is now tied with Redondo for 1st  place int he Bay League with a 4-1-0 record, with 5 games remaining.

Girls Basketball:
It was a great week for Sea King basketball! On Tuesday the girls team got a 47-42 victory over rival Peninsula. They backed it up with a 62-25 win at Inglewood on Friday.

Then team is now 5-2 in Bay League play and are in 3rd place.

Boys Basketball:
The boys had 2 very difficult road games this week against Peninsula and Inglewood. On Tuesday, Peninsula won 60-46 and on Friday, Inglewood prevailed 65-52.

The team is now 2-4 in Bay League play and are in 4th place. 

Girls Water Polo:
The team battled the always-tough Mira Costa Mustangs on Thursday. Mira Costa need up with the win by a score of 9-3. Next up for PV is El Segundo HS at home on Monday. 

The team is now 1-4 in Bay League play and in 4th place.

PEF:

Peninsula Education Foundation will award two $1,500 scholarships
to students in the graduation class of 2017 who are continuing their education at the post-secondary level. Applicants must be currently enrolled in the Palos Verdes Peninsula Unified School District and maintained enrollment for two years prior to graduation. Application deadline is March 1, 2017 at 11:59 pm.
Only online applications will be accepted. The application and more detailed information can be found at www.pvpef.org under "Scholarships."
