San Jose: Fire breaks out at Mi Pueblo Supermarket
A two-alarm fire erupted at a Mi Pueblo Supermarket in East San Jose. Firefighters responding to a report of a fire on the 1700 block of Story Road arrived to find smoke and flames coming from the store's outdoor restaurant and roof. Mercury News

Hazardous Incidents Team attends RCTIC -Radiological/Nuclear Haz Mat training at the FEMA
SJFD Hazardous Incidents Team members attended the RCTIC -Radiological/Nuclear Haz Mat training at the FEMA Training Center in Anniston, Alabama.
This Special Operations Team is participating in advanced training focused on the equipment and procedures needed for responding to Radiological and Nuclear events. Any local emergency will have Firefighters as the initial responders tasked with identification, containment and hopefully mitigation of Hazardous Materials events, both accidents and planned attacks. It could be several hours or days before State, Federal or Military help arrives.
The H.I.T. Team at one time was a single dedicated unit, in the past several years as a result of budget cuts they now cross staff a Truck Company located at Station 29 (Innovation Dr.) in North San Jose.

San Jose Fire crews search for missing kayaker near Dumbarton Bridge
The Coast Guard says a rafter and a kayaker were in the water together, and when the kayak capsized, the rafter called for help. Menlo Park fire officials were able to locate the victim on the raft. He said his friend was still in the water with no life vest and had disappeared. (video)

Happy Ending to a Near Tragedy - San Jose Fireman revive a 16-yr old boy who was trapped in the cavein of a tunnel he was digging in a field near his home on Collingwood Ave. Members of Engine Co. 6 dug the victim out, and the
resuscitator
squad restored him to consciousness. Purpose of the nocturnal tunneling was not learned.
From artist and San Jose Historian Dick Nailen. Old Squad 1's floodlights in use one dark night in South Willow Glen rescuing a young boy who was trapped in a collapse after attempting to dig a large cave.

4 Children Critical After Being Rescued From House Fire in South L.A.
Four children were hospitalized in critical condition Tuesday morning after being rescued from a burning home in the Vermont Knolls neighborhood of South Los Angeles. Firefighters Rescue Worker Pinned Under Retaining Wall
Firefighters rescued a worker who was trapped under a collapsed cement block wall at a residence Tuesday in Sherman Oaks.
The construction worker suffered non-life threatening injuries when he was pinned between the wall and a mound of dirt at a property in the 4200 block of Las Cruces Drive. The worker was digging near the base of the hillside wall when it fell, pinning his legs. (video)

City of Chico leads the state in arson cases
CHICO, Calif. - Arsons in The City of Chico rose by four percent in 2016, and that means a big problem is only getting bigger. In a recently released report, the Chico Fire Department said that the City of Chico had the highest rate of arson per capita in the state of California in 2015.

LA County wants paramedics free to take psychiatric patients to mental health centers
The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors
voted unanimously to sponsor state legislation to change a law that bars paramedics from taking patients to mental health urgent care and sobering centers.
Under the law, which was branded as "outdated" by one county official, paramedics are required to take patients with psychiatric needs only to hospital emergency departments or 9-1-1 receiving units.

Federal prosecutors name EMSA, Director Stephen Williamson in $20 million kickback scheme
Federal prosecutors filed a civil complaint naming EMSA and its director in an alleged kickback scheme regarding a lucrative ambulance services provider contract. The complaint claims that a Texas hospital and ambulance provider, Paramedics Plus LLC, entered into a kickback scheme to obtain and retain a lucrative public ambulance services contracts.

Communications dispatched a full first to a report of an apartment fire with subjects inside. While enroute, a second alarm was requested. Arriving units reported a working fire on the second floor of the complex. Four ambulances were requested to assist at the fire. The fire was knocked down after 30 minutes hours and under control after 1 hour. Red Cross was requested to assist eight individuals displaced by the fire.

San Jose Fire Communications dispatched Engine 5 to reports of a PGE electrical box on fire at the 24 Hour Fitness. E5 requested at Full 1

Alarm, and the gym was evacuated. PGE responded for an energized electrical box. A precautionary standby ambulance was requested, and PD conducted traffic control.
1.26.16 East Ct Station 8
Communications received multiple calls reporting a vegetation fire threatening a structure fire. A Full First was dispatched and the first arriving fire unit reported a large column of smoke coming from a fire near a Senior Housing complex. The fire was knocked down and under control after 1 hour. One patient was transported to a local hospital for treatment for burns. SJPD was requested to deal with the occupants of a homeless camp. No other injuries were reported and all appropriate notifications were made.

A full first was dispatched to a report of the front door and porch of a structure on fire. E24 arrived and found smoke from the front door of the house and a fire in a wall. The fire was placed under control after 30 minutes There were no reported injuries.
1.28.17 Miami Dr Station 16
Communications received multiple calls reporting a house on fire. A Full First was dispatched and an ambulance was dispatched precautionary due to the report of someone possibly still inside the structure. The first arriving fire unit reported heavy fire coming through the roof. A through search was conducted and no occupants were found in the house. The fire was knocked down at and under control after 45 minutes. SJPD was requested for traffic control and PG&E to secure the utilities. All appropriate notifications were made and no injuries were reported. There were a total of 6 adults and 5 children displaced by the fire. Board up was requested, and Red Cross was also requested for 11 displaced residents.
1.28.17 Truckee Ln Station 18
The driver of a passing vehicle called in a potential patio fire. A full first was dispatched. E13 made access and found fire and smoke in the attic. The fire was determined to be in the garage as well. Several residents evacuated the house along with 5 dogs. The fire was placed under control after 30 minutes. Board up provided 2 sheets of plywood and Red Cross was called out for 3 adults, one child and 5 dogs.

Fire Communications dispatched E17 for a report of a County trash truck that was on fire, and arrived to a fully involved fire threatening the vegetation. E17 requested a 2

engine, a brush patrol, and Calfire E1672 for suppression. The fuel was confirmed contained to the tank and was not leaking. E13/WT13 were requested code 2 for a water supply. One subject was transported for smoke inhalation.

Alarm was requested due to heavy smoke and flames. The fire was placed under control after 2 hours. There were no injuries reported. An inspector was requested from via County Communications to check the premises. San Jose Police Department responded for traffic control, board up was requested, and all appropriate notifications were made.

Communications received multiple calls reporting smoke coming from a residence. A Full First was dispatched and first arriving fire unit reported heavy smoke coming from the garage of the residence. The fire was knocked down after 20 minutes. One patient was transported to a local hospital for burns. SJPD was requested for traffic control and PG&E to secure the utilities. No other injuries were reported and all appropriate notifications were made.
RESCUE
San Jose Fire Communications dispatched Engine 25 to standby at the Alviso Marina at the request of San Jose Police Department, who reported a person in a kayak had flipped over. Engine 25 requested the USAR respond with water rescue equipment. The search was coordinated with the Coast Guard. One patient in a boat was treated. The Coast Guard requested the search for the kayaker be suspended at 2200 hours.
