2016 Innovation Grant Recipients Announced
The recipients of the 2016 Delta Dental of Colorado Foundation  Innovation Grants have been officially announced. This initiative works to develop and test new approaches to some of the state's most pressing oral health challenges. The foundation, in partnership with the company, funded a total of $220,000 to support these projects. The recipients are an exciting group of researchers, nonprofits, and high-tech companies throughout the Front Range:
  • Colorado School of Mines will work to advance regenerative materials for teeth. This new approach for treating a cavity would restore a tooth to its original condition, eliminating the need for a traditional filling.
  • Sharklet Technologies will apply its technology to a dental setting for the first time to produce bacteria-resistant retainers and other devices.
  • Quadric BioMed will work to bring to market a new type of dental implant that could significantly reduce bacteria build-up common with traditional implant devices.
  • Dental Aid seeks to reduce emergency department visits and overall cost of care by directing patients to dental providers and establishing dental homes for patients.
  • Clinica Family Health Services will develop new practice-management tools to improve dental care quality at its clinics.
Congratulation to the recipients of the foundation's innovation grants.

The Barbara Springer Endowed Scholarship in Pediatric Preventive Dentistry
This past December, Denise Kassebaum, CU School of Dental Medicine dean, announced the establishment of the Barbara Springer Endowed Scholarship in Pediatric Preventive Dentistry at the CU School of Dental Medicine (SDM).  The scholarship fund will be used to provide at least one scholarship annually for diverse students at the SDM who are conducting their clinical work in pediatric preventive dentistry.

Barbara previously served as the executive director of the Delta Dental of Colorado Foundation and the vice president of administration and general counsel for Delta Dental of Colorado from 2002 to 2016. Under her leadership, the foundation made good dental health a community priority with a major focus on preventing decay in Colorado's kids. Key initiatives have included:
  • Educational programs that target low-income, high-risk families.
  • Dental health education for medical and dental students at the CU Anschutz Medical Campus.
  • Focusing on teaching good dental habits and prevention.
  • Initiating policy changes that improve communities.
A third-year dental student, Grace, was the inaugural recipient of the scholarship. This was a great note for Barbara to leave with as she recently retired after serving for a decade as the foundation's executive director.
