Did you know?

Magnetics was established in 1949.
Our first products were tape wound cores that proved superior to vacuum tubes in many applications.  The market for tape wound cores grew rapidly because these magnetic components performed better due to environmental and operational advantages. Magnetics quickly positioned themselves as a leader in this field and have remained so ever since.

Creating a Flyback Transformer?

Magnetics offers three different materials in toroidal powder cores that have distributed air gaps, as well as gapped ferrite cores, which are all used to create maximum change in flux density for flyback transformers. Read more about selecting a distributed air gap core for flyback transformers here.

Hong Kong Distribution Center Relocating

Magnetics' Hong Kong Distribution Center will be relocating to a new facility the first week in August. The new facility is located at:

Unit A on 5th Floor of Olympic Godown

No. 8 Sze Shan Street

Yau Tong, Kowloon, Hong Kong.

Magnetics will ship from the current location through end of business July 31, 2014 and will resume shipments from the new location on August 6, 2014. There will be no shipments on August 1, August 4 and August 5, 2014.

Magnetics appreciates your cooperation and patience in this transition.

Inductor Cores:  Material and Shape Choices

An inductor is a current filtering device. By resisting change in current, the filter inductor essentially accumulates stored energy as an AC current crests each cycle, and releases that energy as it minimizes. Power inductors require the presence of an air gap within the core structure. The purpose of the gap is to store the energy, and to prevent the core from saturating under load.

The power inductor gap may be realized in one of two fashions, discrete or distributed.

Distributed gap materials are powder cores

Discrete gaps are most commonly used in ferrite cores.

The inductor designer must meet the energy storage (inductance) requirement, as well as requirements for total loss, space, cost, EMI, fault-tolerance, temperature performance, and reliability. In the many cases powder cores have the clear advantage. Then the designer has a variety of options in choosing among the powder cores.

Power Factor Correction: Why Condition Power?

There are many good reasons to condition power:
  • Control line voltage.
  • Control current distortion.
  • Comply with European Standard IEC 555, now IEC/EN 61000-3-3. Limitation of voltage fluctuation and flicker in low voltage supply systems.
  • Comply with US Energy Star recommendations.
  • Comply with CNIS China Institute of Standardization.
  • Avoid transients, surges, sags, power interruptions and control harmonics.
  • Save money.
