Ag Intern - Dominic Fanucchi

Check out our Agriculture Intern, Dominic Fanucchi working hard at Kushman's Feed & Farm Supply. Dominic spends two to three days a week stocking shelves, loading hay and feed, and learning about different aspects of the agriculture industry from the feed store or the many customers that come through the door. His favorite part of his internship so far is learning to use new machines and tools. Owner Seth Kushman says Dominic has been a huge help and will be missed at the end of his internship. Thank you to Kushman's Feed & Farm Supply for this great opportunity!

Newspaper Club - First Edition

A Message from the Newspaper Club:

As many of you may know, Garces has been lacking a school newspaper for a while. Since August the newspaper staff has been working tirelessly to change that. From raising money, to writing articles, the newspaper staff has been determined to bring back the Garces Rampage. We are happy to announce the completion of our first issue, and we hope our paper finds its way into your hands.

Pictured are members of the Newspaper Club raising funds at Foodapalooza.  They are editor
Renee Rasmussen, along with Catherine Macias, Citali Sanchez-Acosta, Andrea Gomez, Jana Dulcich and Alex Penner.

We are all looking forward to reading their first edition.  Nice job Rams!
Please Join Us - Candlelit Family Mass

Please join us for a very special evening as we will gather to celebrate the birth of our Lord with a special candlelit Mass on Monday, December 11th in the Garces Chapel at 6:00 p.m.  Garces Rector, Reverend Monsignor Perry Kavookjian, will be the celebrant and we will have Garces band and choir students leading us in Christmas hymns we all know and love to sing at this time of year. After Mass, there will be short reception hosted by the Garces Parent Club for everyone to have a chance to visit and enjoy a Christmas treat and hot cocoa.  The entire Garces community is invited to join us - families, alumni, and friends.
Notre Dame Science & Religion Initiative

Garces Memorial High School has been chosen to participate in Foundations Notre Dame as part of the Science and Religion Initiative of 2018.  Rebecca Meek, Nubia Sierra and Sarah Reyna will comprise a team representing the three areas of Science,Math and Religion.  They will attend the seminar this summer on the campus of The University of Notre Dame.

The seminar's goal is to give each teacher a solid grasp of the issues lying at the interface of science and religion, and to support schools in their efforts to create lesson plans or to modify the existing curriculum. We are honored  and excited for our teachers as they embark on this journey of collaborating with other instructors throughout the United States.
Congratulations to our teachers who were selected to attend!
Christmas Week

Next week Garces will celebrate Christmas all week long! The students can dress up everyday - even on Formal Day.  Well, they can add a touch of Christmas on Formal Day by wearing a Christmas tie or Christmas socks.  The Parent Club will give away one formal bid each day to the Garces student who has embraced the spirit of the day and comes decked out in appropriate Christmas attire for that day's theme.  Please encourage your student to dress up - it will be a fun week on our campus and we want everyone to take part in the festivities. We will post photos and stories on Instagram @gmhsrams.
Christmas Concert

The Garces Band, along with Mr. Scott Smith, Mrs. Margaret Smith, and Mr. Chili Ortega, have been busily preparing for the Christmas Concert and it promises to be a glorious evening full of the sounds of the season!  There is no cost to attend and there will be treats afterwards.

Please come out and join us as it will be a special night full of the spirit of Christmas.  Some of the songs they will be performing are:

The T.W.I.R.P. Dance

The school's annual Sadie Hawkins Dance this Saturday is when the girls traditionally ask out the boys, often today with signs in the quad at lunch or on social media posts.  Its precursor in 1948 was the T.W.I.R.P Dance (The Woman Is Required to Pay), where the process was a bit more direct.

A whistle was blown at lunch, after which the boys were chased all over the campus by the girls and had to go to the dance with the first girl to catch them.  The dance was held in the All-Purpose Building (now St. Dominic Chapel).  The girls had to pay seventy-five cents a couple for their dance bids.

Congratulations Mr. Gordon

Garces Theology teacher, Mr. Tim Gordon, will be debuting two 'babies' before finals week: first, his wife gave birth to their fifth child, Gabriel Ambrose, on Wednesday, December 6; second, on December 11, his book Catholic Republic: Why America Will Perish Without Rome will be released by Milo Yiannopoulos's Dangerous Books.

Gabriel Ambrose Gordon was born at 11:01 p.m. on December 6th and weighed 7 lbs, 1 oz.  If you would like to drop off a meal for the Gordon family, please click on the Meal Train link below:

Message from
Mrs. Debra Sakowski
Asst. Principal of Academic Affairs

"On the 6th day of Christmas my true love gave to me..." We all know the lyrics to this traditional Christmas song and at this time of the year, I am certain we would all like to add our own verses! Somehow, "Six geese a laying," isn't what I had in mind for my Christmas gift. What I do have in mind is to send you a reminder of what to expect for the upcoming weeks.

Your students will be taking their final exams! The exam schedule is as follows:

Monday, Dec. 18th
Periods 1 & 3
Tuesday, Dec. 19th
Periods 2 & 6
Wednesday. Dec. 20th
Periods 5 & 7
Thursday, Dec. 21st
Period 4

The first final of each day begins at 8:00 am and the second final begins at 10:00 am with a thirty-minute break in between finals.  School is out at 11:30 am on Monday through Wednesday and then on Thursday, December 21st, school is out at 9:30 am.

School uniform is required for all students during this week.

If you are planning on traveling early for the holiday, and your child will miss an exam, please have your student see Mrs. Sakowski or their counselor to discuss a plan for making up their finals.  If your child becomes ill and is unable to sit for a final, please contact Mrs. Sakowski and/or your child's counselor so plans can be made for make-up testing.  Students who do not sit for exams, prior to the posting of grades, will receive an I, incomplete, on their grade report.  Once the student completes the final exam, within 10 school days of the posting of grades, the make-up grade will be posted on the final transcript.

Seniors who have a grade of 93% or above in their class, prior to the final exam, will be given the option to 'OPT OUT' of their final exam. AP exemptions will be left to teacher discretion. This is a Senior privilege only.

You may view your student's first semester grades, online, January 12th and look for their report cards to be mailed home the week of January 22nd. These grades DO effect eligibility for athletics and extra- curricular activities. Please take the time to review your students' grades and contact Mrs. Sakowski or your student's counselor if you have any concerns regarding their progress and or eligibility.

Garces will be offering an SAT Prep class beginning Jan. 22, 2018. Mr. Garcia will teach the Math class and Ms. Bianco will teach the English class.  Interested students may complete the registration form and sign up now through Jan.15th for the class.  We encourage students who plan on taking the SAT this year to register for the class.  Please use the Parents tab on Garces.org to download the application.

Registration for current students for the 2018-19 school year is also right around the corner so please set aside the evening of February 26th for the "Current Student- Registration Information Night for Parents."  We will present information on the courses offered for the upcoming year along with the required courses needed for each grade level and graduation.  We will also review the registration forms, honors and AP contracts students will need to complete and return to the Counseling Department with parent signatures.

We will be off campus, and the office will be closed, December 22, 2017 through January 8, 2018.  Please do not hesitate to contact me, upon my return, if you have any questions or concerns regarding your student.

Please have a joyous holiday season and remember, "The magic of Christmas is not in presents, but in HIS presence."
SCHOOL WIDE CHRISTMAS SERVICE PROJECT - ADOPT A FAMILY

This year, in the spirit of giving, we have asked each homeroom class to adopt a family.  Every homeroom has a list of family members - ages and sizes - and are putting together gifts and other items as needed.  Families will be contacted to see what items children are hoping Santa will bring along with a list of items that are needed - such as a new warm jacket.  Or a Christmas Tree.  Or a gift card to a local grocery store to purchase items for a Christmas dinner.  The homerooms will deliver wrapped gifts and items to the families.

Advent Poem by Garces Sophomore
Ryan Kammeraad

In Mr. Bedoy's Theology class, they discussed King David and his faith as a King and as servant of God.  The students had to write a poem based on Parallelism similar to how David writes some of his Psalms.  Mr. Bedoy wanted to share this one because he felt it was
uplifting in this Advent Season.  It foreshadows Jesus and the coming of God into our world at Christmas. Below is the poem written by Ryan Kammeraad:

Who is the man that shall build the Kingdom?
Who is the man that is after His own heart?

'Tis the man who slays the giant,
'Tis the armorless but faithful.

Who comes like a Godly angel to aid kings of their devils?
Who is the man that plays music from the heart?

It is the one who calls himself king,
It is the one who calls himself priest,

None but he can deliver the ark,
None but he who treats the ark holy.
