BRIEFS from BARWIN
From the Desk of Sarasota
City Manager Tom Barwin
December 8, 2017
PHOTO OF THE WEEK
Santa Claus is "Gone Fishing" atop a sailboat docked by Bayfront Park. It's one of many boats getting festive for the holidays with decorations and lights. Some of those boats will show off their holiday spirit this weekend in the annual  Holiday Boat Parade of Lights. It will be held this Saturday, December 9 at 6 p.m. Boats will be judged in several different categories, including an award for "Most Creative" entry. The best places to view the parade are Marina Jack, Bayfront Park, City Island and Centennial Park. We hope to see you there!

This Week's Items to Know:

1.
St. Armands Garage - Advanced Design     A much more detailed design of the St. Armands Garage is now available.  The animated advanced design, created by design team Kimley-Horn, provides a realistic look at what it will be like to approach the facility at Adams & Madison.

The parking structure will be four stories with approximately 500 parking spaces.  It will be built at the current site of a surface parking lot, providing a net increase of 300 spaces.

The facility has an open concept design with an emphasis on access, mobility and safety.  A large, secure area on the ground floor will be reserved for bicycle storage.  Public restrooms also will be available.

We plan to break ground on the facility in April.  It's expected to be finished and open to the public by December 2018.

2.
Public Art - Cocoanut & Palm  In last week's edition of Weekly Briefs, we asked your opinion on the three finalists for the public art piece to be installed in the Cocoanut & Palm Ave. roundabout.

Earlier this week, the City Commission approved the production and installation of option #3, "Jumping Fish", which overwhelmingly was the fan favorite on social media.

"Jumping Fish" will be commissioned by the City and installed at Cocoanut and Palm Ave.

Staff will now finalize a contract with the artist, Jeffrey Laramore.  The piece should be installed and ready for public viewing by early Summer 2018.

Thanks to all who were involved with this process, including volunteer Public Art Committee Members, the public, elected officials and staff.

3.
Tree Mitigation - FREE Trees  Did you know City of Sarasota residents can register to receive a free tree as part of a developer's tree mitigation plan?

It's easy to register.  Just fill out the Public Tree Request form online and you'll be placed on the waiting list.  When City staff determines a developer is eligible to mitigate off-site, the Public Tree Request list will be consulted to match a nearby homeowner with a tree.

As part of a developer's tree mitigation plan,

City Commission in June 2017.

can be located within a 1,000 foot radius from where they're removed or within the same neighborhood.  This unique program was created last summer when the City
Commission revised the tree ordinance.

The developer will be responsible for delivering and planting the tree and the homeowner will have to care for it for at least one year.

In addition to residents, we encourage developers to register for the program by contacting Arborist Mark Miller:  941-365-2200 ext. 4345.

Many thanks to Mark Miller and Nick Alexandrou, the City's GIS Coordinator, for creating this user-friendly process, which will benefit interested homeowners and assist developers in fulfilling mitigation requirements while supporting the City's tree canopy.

4.
Team of the Quarter   Congratulations to City employees Rodney Jackson and Wendell Rainey from the Water Distribution area of the Utilities Department for becoming our Team of the Quarter! The two have proven they're truly dedicated to their work.
City employees Wendell Rainey (Left) and Rodney Jackson (Right) were recognized at Monday night's commission meeting.

The evening Hurricane Irma made landfall, Rodney and Wendell braved tropical force winds to tend to a water main break, which impacted a 7-block area. Those high winds had pulled a tree up by its roots, causing damage to the water line.

In the end, they were able to shut off the water supply at the site, preventing substantial water loss for Sarasota residents.

Both Rodney and Wendell began their careers with the City in temporary positions and have worked their way up to Utility Mechanic II and Crew Leader I respectively. We look forward to their continued growth with the City and we thank them for their commitment throughout those trying times!

5.
Bobby Jones Grille Relaunched    The Bobby Jones Grille is now open for business at our historic, municipal golf course Bobby Jones Golf Club, with a brand new vendor called Landscapes Management Company.

The public is invited to an open house with complimentary appetizers and soft drinks on Thursday, December 14 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Bobby Jones Grille, 1000 Circus Blvd. The event will also include a first look at some special promotions for 2018.
Golfers from the Bobby Jones Men's Association enjoy their holiday lunch in the Bobby Jones Grille.

The new vendor caters to golfers before, after and during their rounds with a revitalized menu and on-course beverage carts. The company also anticipates making use of the club's grille room and patio space for banquets, parties and larger events.

This company has more than 40 years of experience in the golf business, and we feel confident that expertise will continue to improve the experience for our golfers at Bobby Jones.

The grille is, of course, not just for golfers though. All are welcome to enjoy!

6.
Reindeer Games  Once again this year, staff at Bobby Jones will ho- ho-host some holiday cheer on Christmas Day!

The 10th Annual Reindeer Games will get underway on Christmas morning, Mon., December 25, at 8:45 a.m. with a shotgun start. It's under $33 (plus tax) to play 18 holes with a cart -- plus a breakfast buffet at the newly relaunched Bobby Jones Grille.

Reindeer Games would be a great way to test that new putter or driver you might find under the tree!

In addition to holiday festivities, the American Course will be open for regular 18-hole play until 9 a.m.  For those interested in playing a shorter round, 9-hole play will be available on the American Course and the Gillespie Course until 11 a.m.

Thanks to our dedicated staff at Bobby Jones who will be away from their families on Christmas to ensure this popular recreation facility is open and available for visitors on the holiday.
