Becoming Inspirational

Among the challenging situations that confront Yosef in this week's parsha is his encounter with the wife of Potiphar. The Torah describes how she tried to seduce Yosef and then framed him. The midrash adds more color to the story by suggesting that Yosef was about to succumb to her advances but that he was able to withstand the temptation as the image of his father Yaakov appeared in his mind. When thinking of his father, Yosef found the resolve to do the right thing. Rav Yaakov Kaminetzky, in one of my favorite parhsa insights, describes how this midrash offers a powerful message for us as parents and educators. Rav Kaminetzky points out that parents and educators need to make sure that we develop close relationships with our children and our students so that when they think of us, they want to do the right thing. Parents and educators must strive to be like Yaakov, so that when our children imagine us in their minds, they will feel connected to our value systems and want to continue along the path that we've charted for them. By genuinely loving our students, respecting them deeply, and caring for their personal and spiritual well-being, we as educators can help ensure that our students see the beauty of a life committed to Hashem and His Torah.

Thank you to the staff of Highlites for putting together another stellar edition. I hope that everyone is able to gain a glimpse into the wonderful educational opportunities that our students are engaged in as they are guided toward a path of growth and discovery.

Last Shabbos, KYHS students and staff converged upon Hollywood, FL for the annual Hollywood Shabbaton. An uplifting oneg with snacks and singing kicked off the activities on Friday night. On Saturday, after parents and students attended shiurim given by different teachers, there was a fantastic lunch, culminating with an early mincha.

The Shabbaton was a wonderful bonding experience for teachers, students, and parents, and, on behalf of the Hollywood contingent, I would like to thank all those who planned and attended the Shabbaton for creating an amazing experience

Mrs. Kanner Visits Alumni in Israel
Graphic by Akiva Groman ('19)
My breakfast with all our alumni together was cancelled due to fears  of the "day of rage" threatened by the Palestinians . Thank G-d I was able to see each girl and speak to them individually while visiting them in their seminaries.
Despite the disappointment of not getting together as a group, this has been a trip filled with nachat and pride. Each girl is growing, learning, making new friends and loving and enjoying every minute  of being in Israel.
Love to each of you from each of them,
Love from Yerushalyim -the capital of Israel

Juniors Attend College Night to Learn All They Need to Know About the College Process
Graphic by Sydney Freedman ('20)
Article by Sara Deichman ('19)

For seniors, college is right around the corner. But for juniors, the process has just begun. Last year, the Class of 2019 was briefly introduced to the college process. However, this week, students and their parents reassembled to submerge themselves into information about the process and fully begin the journey to college. Students and their parents were handed an information packed binder, sometimes referred to within KYHS as the "College Guidance Bible," with all there is to know about college, including required forms and beneficial articles.
Students and parents then listened to the college guidance team speak about the next steps to be taking. Of course, the night wouldn't have been complete without some college trivia with prizes. Overall, the night was profoundly informative and educational. With the college guidance team and parents at our sides, students are ready to embark on the next chapter of our lives. And thankfully, we now have the "College Guidance Bible" to help get us there as well.

Last Monday, Isaac Shapiro began a Chassidut club. Rabbi Yossi Denburg, the rabbi of Chabad of Boca, came to the school during lunch to teach Tanya to a group of interested students.
Additionally on Thursday we celebrated Yud Tet Kislev, an important date in the Chabad calendar. Dr. Wolf led the festivities with potato kugel and other goodies. "Anyone who joins the club will learn A LOT about the history of Chassidus and about Tanya."
