The Bureau of Labor Statistics released its estimate of new hiring for November, which showed employers adding 228,000 jobs. The brisk pace of hiring shows that the short-term impact of the fall's hurricanes has past and indicates that employers remain confident about their prospects for 2018. Unemployment remained at 4.1 percent.

Project News  

The senior living sector of the market continues to boom. Some $250 million in senior living apartments will be underway in metro Pittsburgh by mid-January. Contractors are pricing the $30 million Crossings senior living community Smith Packett has planned for Indiana Township. The project has 154 units of independent and assisted living, plus 40 memory care beds. A similar project, the Salina of Cranberry, is being budgeted at the Village of Cranberry Woods. That senior community is being developed by the Formation Group from Atlanta. BuildingPittsburgh has more details.
 
Another combined cycle power plant is nearing construction in the region. The 1,000 MW, $600 million Renaissance Energy Center will be built by APV at the Hatfield's Ferry site near Carmichaels in Greene County. Siemens is reported to be the EPC taking bids on the project.  C M Mascaro Construction has the $5.4 million Penn State agricultural digester facilities out to bid on Dec. 19. The PBX has more details on the bid packages.On the small but interesting side, proposals are being taken from A. Martini & Co., Franjo and Rycon for the 20,000 square foot TI for Delphi Automotive in RIDC Park in O'Hara. AHN has narrowed the competition for its new Wexford hospital to Turner, Massaro/Gilbane and Rycon/Yates.

Dwight Kuhn passed away at his home on December 7. Dwight worked 44 years for Jendoco Construction, retiring as president of the company in 2013. An industry leader, Kuhn served on many boards, including chairing the AIA-MBA Joint Committee and serving on the Carpenters Board of Pensions. Read more Dwight's life and funeral arrangements.

NEXT architecture announced the promotion of Christopher Pless to principal. NEXT also promoted Nick Miller and Rachel Pless to associates. NEXT architecture hired Marie Knupp and Izzy DiGnazio as interior designers and Paul Bench as intern architect.
